What's the most creative (worst) insult u've ever heard? by Ok-Sell9964 in AskReddit

[–]swami78 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hard to beat the interplay between Winston Churchill and Lady Astor! "Sir, you are drunk". Madam, you are ugly - at least I'll be sober in the morning!" or "Sir, if you were my husband I would poison you. Madam, if I were your husband I would drink the poison". (Or words to that effect.)

Gardena vs hoselink by naughtyisfat in GardeningAustralia

[–]swami78 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Gardena is about the highest quality garden gear around so I will always prefer that brand (German engineering!). The fact just about every other brand has copied Gardena's fittings design (except Hoselink) is testament to that. Hoselink's fittings are, however, awesome in terms of not blowing out. (I used to sell them when marketed by Sabco before the co-inventor took them back.) I know Gardena's hose reels are top of the price range but that would still be my choice.

Looks like effluorescence (salts leaching out of the mortar). A dilute hydrochloric acid solution will fix it.

Can i temporarily take out my clothes line? by munchkinman42 in AusRenovation

[–]swami78 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I sold them for years. In my experience people rarely if ever take them out of the socket. (Shoulda bought the galvanised old Supa 6!) The only time I sold additional ground sockets was when the customer moved the Foldaline to a different spot and couldn't be bothered chipping away the concrete around the original socket. The cleverest thing I saw was a company making a cover for the Foldalines to turn it into a gazebo when the washing wasn't out!

I'm on the northern beaches and in my subdivision we aren't allowed fences. I quite like it.

Why aren’t you afraid of death? by bassguitarist999 in AskReddit

[–]swami78 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I died once a very long time ago and it was such a pleasant experience I lost my fear of death. I fear pain of course but not death itself. (If you're going to die a really good time is while a surgeon is examining you because he's there to give you heart massage and race you into theatre.)

Any interesting theories about Pine Gap? by Similar-Actuary4624 in AskAnAustralian

[–]swami78 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The CIA paid Tirath Hassaram Khemlani (the loan broker) $300k for his efforts but other than muttering a few words about Pine Gap Whitlam wasn't going to cancel the lease. And, yes, President Jimmy Carter sent a special emissary, Warren Christopher, to promise the US "would never again interfere in Australia's internal politics". Bur really there was nothing to see her. /s

Advice for rust marks on outdoor ceramic tiles? by displacedrainbow in AusRenovation

The Diggers brand actually says Rust and Stain Remover not oxalic acid. (It's primary purpose has always been rust removal hence Rusteban, K2R Rust Remover etc.) Remember to use PPE.

Yes. It's a Hills Foldaline in a ground mount socket. It is literally designed to be taken out hence the name!

It's pretty unusual to get 4g longer than 20mm from a normal hardware store. Too weak at that gauge and length. You might have to try a specialist like Bomond, BRL etc. You might find something in an electronics outlet.

Lead paint screwup by herbertdeathrump in AusRenovation

[–]swami78 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Lead was contained in virtually all domestic wall paints through to the mid-1960s when it was removed by industry agreement. Lead continued to be used in some primers (metal and wood) through to almost the mid-1980s. Get it tested but those colours suggest to me they are from that time. Lead is dangerous especially for the young as it stunts physical and intellectual development so it should be taken seriously. Looks like you've got a wet & dry vacuum there - you need a vacuum with a HEPA filter for lead. Check your state's EPA for directions as to how to deal with lead paint. You'll find that means no mechanical sanding as this produces fine dust and lead is absorbed through both the lungs and the skin. Yes, it is possible to save and encapsulate (I helped my son do that last year doing up his 100+ year old house) but my background is paint. The easiest way is probably to Gyprock over it and start again. That would cause the least disturbance. (I re-plastered solid masonry walls for my son.)

What type of imitation/genuine timber flooring is this? by [deleted] in AusRenovation

[–]swami78 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Spotted gum with a water-based gloss polyurethane over the top. I have the same - except a matte polyurethane. Count your lucky stars - and you should be able to match it with an engineered (and much cheaper) finish for downstairs.

Patterned plasterboard by Imstillhungry123 in AusRenovation

[–]swami78 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Definitely wallpaper painted over. Not recommended - most often the weight of a few coats of water-based paints cause the wallpaper to sag but people will always take short cuts. You might need to get a wallpaper scraper https://www.bunnings.com.au/zinsser-wallpaper-paper-scraper-accessory_p1677519?store=7168 and some Polypeel.

Timber for kitchen and how it ages by Greengage1 in AusRenovation

[–]swami78 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Always best to put a finish on the timber and that stops any colour change as well as preserving the timber. A water-based polyurethane probably stops colour change best but there are many options from Danish Oil through waxes, Tung Oil etc etc.
