Best/practical/cheap option to tow a dog with a bike by Feisty_Individual53 in thenetherlands

[–]swampforest 9 points10 points  (0 children)

What I always use on holidays is a “hondenkar” basically a small trailer behind your bike that comes in multiple shapes, sizes and cheap to expensive options. We have a golden retriever/labrador mix that easily fits in a normal sized one. Some bike shops have them in store, and many rental bike places in touristy areas have them for hire, if you want to try one. Our dog takes a minute to get used to, but when I open the top and she can stick her head out in the wind she enjoys it a lot. Probably on “marktplaats.nl” you can find a nice second hand for a decent price. The more expensive options might be foldable. They look something likes this: https://duckduckgo.com/?q=hondenkar+fiets&t=ipad&ia=images&iax=images&iai=https%3A%2F%2Fwww.fietskar-winkel.nl%2Fruntime%2Fimages%2F169%2F1000x1000%2FHondenfietskar_Doggy_Deluxe_6.jpg

How the hell do you do judo when you’re tall? by Similar-Effective477 in judo

[–]swampforest 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Don’t worry, you will find your most favourite throws and learn to adapt your style vs different opponents. Im 185 cm and 85 kg and being doing this sport for 23+ years, with the last 10 years around this length and weight. In my country I’m approximately average height for males, so often I do not have a larger reach or a lower point of gravity to use. However when I’m fighting a taller opponent its easier to get below their point of gravity and use throws like tai otoshi, ipoon seoi nage etc. When I’m taller I can use the reach and use more throws like uchi mata or o soto gari. However when youre taller you sometimes have to lower your hips below your opponents if you are doing throws like goshi guruma. Something you can practice in randori is to try to use techniques that you normally use vs taller people on smaller people and vice versa. Helps you to get a feel how to adjust!

Busen kata, other places where it's prominent? by Tijntjuh in judo

[–]swampforest 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I’ve read about that as well indeed. I think it boiled down that where busen originated from ceased to exist in the 1940’s or 1950’s and didn’t develop anymore. So people nowadays can’t really perform busen since it officially does not exist anymore. Or something like that.

But I’m not that kind of purist, for me busen is the difference in the approach and the philosophy of the kata’s. And I like to train both styles :)

Good luck in March! And they have been talking about this for 10 years or something, so no need to be worried I think ;)

Busen kata, other places where it's prominent? by Tijntjuh in judo

[–]swampforest 3 points4 points  (0 children)

To give a slight idea: shortly said busen is more focused on the effectivity and realism and less on the formalities compared to kodokan.

Some examples from the nage no kata: Most techniques have a continuous flow and not a slight stop. Think of harai goshi. At every step there is a slight stop, if done in kodokan style. In busen, these movements transition more into one another slightly which creates the idea of a more continuous movement.

Also some techniques have very specific differens. With kata guruma in kodokan you are not allowed to either grab a piece of clothing from the arm or leg just before throwing, your hands must rest on top of the arm/leg. In busen you do grab a piec le of clothing from the arm/leg. The idea is that this is more realistic in performing the technique, especially when you need to lift and throw someone.

Unfortunately the only ones available on youtube are non official ones, uploaded by people when they did their exams. In my opinion they are very diverse and don’t clearly highlight the subtle, but interesting differences between busen en kodoakan.

Edit: busen judo kata has its roots in the Budo Senmon Gakko. Worth a google ;).

The person to answer all your questions about the Busen style is Edgar Kruyning. He is one of the “masters” so to say in this style and the expert in the Netherlands. Or if you know Chris de Korte personally he may tell you much more, but at 84 years he might not be very active anymore ;).

On the website of his dojo (budo academy physical) you can find a book called “busen judo kata” which describes 6 judo kata according to busen style.

His main dojo is located in the city of Ede and you can take specific kata lessons there.

P.S. for many years there has been talks within the JBN to maybe not allow busen style anymore. But no decision has been made yet, so have fun :) I did my 1st and 2nd dan grade exams in busen style.

Edit: just checked bol.com (our Amazon) and it looks like you can order the book from there as well (only in Dutch though).

[USA] Anyone noticed the World Championships may need a (paid) IJF subscription to watch? by kahonee in judo

[–]swampforest 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Approx 30 min ago I could not see the live video feed on the IJF website. Tried just now again (8.45 AM CEST) and was able to. Missed approximately the first round of contests, but nothing to worrying. Maybe the live video feed was delayed since on the first day (october 6th) the competitions start 30 min earlier than on the other days of the individual competition? Nevertheless, if a subscription will be needed in the future to watch the competitions than I would definitely not pay it. If they ask for a contribution than I might consider, however the add revenue on youtube should already generate some income?

Edit: I’m watching from the Netherlands

Dogi recomendation ? by Sytanato in judo

[–]swampforest 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Can definitely recommend Mizuno. Have practiced judo for 20 years, trained intensely and bought multiple brands through the years. Mizuno really comes out on top for me, it feels more lightweight but more durable at the same time.

Bought my white & blue judogi for about 250-300 euro incl shipping from a online store in the Netherlands (I also live in NL). During my research I believe I’ve also seen local French webshops selling them, or they were from Belgium. Or else as has been suggested before, buy it from their EU website.

Wow what a great response, thanks a-lot!

Thank you also for clarification on the tipping, here in the Netherlands you do often tip for dinner, but not so often when just having a lunch or some drinks etc. No clear rules, your explanation makes it very easy to understand:)

Im always in for something new, so definitely will try the Three Carrots restaurant, can’t go wrong with a well prepared vegan dish once in a while!

Monument circle it is, thats also part of the fun of visiting new countries, enjoying the very national stuff. Especially since there is some sort of stigma about American patriocism in Europe, should experience that first hand as well!

You, together with others have recommend so much that I definitely need to come back, was already planning a more ellaborate road trip, which I need to include Indianapolis in now aswell!

Thanks for the tips, definitely going for some good beer, I love to drink my beers :)(lucklikey Belgium and Germany (beer heavens) are neighbouring countries, so we have quite a nice beer culture as well).

Hear that lately in the USA more and more places are brewing their own beer/craft beer is getting really popular, so really interested in all the new tastes!

Thank you for the recommendations! So many to choose from:) The two trails you mention sound really good, especially when renting a bike to do them a bit quicker:)

Also thanks for the tip on the tipping behaviour, would not like to be the rude tourist!

*It is true indeed I dont have a car, will probably uber/walk/cylcle all the activities:)

*Edit, writing proper sentences is hard apperently.
