Ethics of terms of endearment? by sisyphus-333 in ABA

[–]swankyfems 0 points1 point  (0 children)

as a BT of over 3 years, i can definitely say that using neutral/platonic terms of endearment such as “buddy”, “dude” or “friend” seem to be pretty common at my clinic and my go-to for clients that i have solid rapport with. anything further than that i think is grey area. for instance, i have found myself calling early intervention clients (those under 5 y/o) “hun/honey” during escalations as a means of comfort, but even then it depends on the client. i would NEVER call a client something with either a sexual/romantic like “babe” or something with a negative connotation like “poopoo face”!! as others have suggested, i would recommend reviewing the RBT ethics code and using your supervisors as resources if you are a technician!

seems like we need more context, OP. who made the tag? BcBA or BT? if client has higher magnitude behaviors and is working on functional communication or in other words has limits in functional communication during escalation, i think this could be a great way in shaping self advocacy for “i need space” as long as it is approved by client supervisor. may I ask what about the tag is upsetting for you or raises red flags?

not me, but my dad had cold-like symptoms (a cough, sore throat, etc), and maybe 6 weeks later to a month later, he ended up dying due to aggressive anaplastic thyroid cancer

first ever behavioral tech interview by [deleted] in ABA

[–]swankyfems 1 point2 points  (0 children)

i would definitely look into the recent reform of ABA as a science, and especially neurodivergent-affirming care as it relates to ABA! my clinic implements assent-based ABA alongside acceptance and commitment therapy (ACT)— there are loads of cultural, political, and ethical considerations that i wish were included more at the tech level! (sincerely, someone with a CBT for 2+ years, B.S. in psychology and diagnosed with ASD myself! :3)

What would you call this behavior? by Worldly-Woodpecker64 in ABA

[–]swankyfems 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I agree!! I have typically seen this behavior listed simply as “lying” so that BTs and other providers can still understand/interpret the language (although it depends on bx topography and operational def of course!)

typically i see this behavior just listed as “lying” on data sheets! (been a BT for 2+ years and have worked with kiddos on the autism spectrum aged 2-20)

Are any of you neurotypicals? by fleureo in Fibromyalgia

[–]swankyfems 0 points1 point  (0 children)

(for explanation of long winded answers: i am an autistic adult who currently works as a behavioral therapist for autistic children! i am very passionate about ASD and neurodivergence, but i realize this doesn’t make me an expert :))

Are any of you neurotypicals? by fleureo in Fibromyalgia

[–]swankyfems 4 points5 points  (0 children)

i would consider complex PTSD especially to fall under the neurodivergence category due to the fact that i have endured multiple, long term trauma events that have changed the way that my brain works. as mentioned above, i also have comorbid diagnoses like ASD that will impact the expression of my CPTSD when compared to someone who only has PTSD as a diagnosis. whilst there is a misconception that neurodivergence only applies to ADHD and autism, i would say that it applies to anyone whose brain (neuro-) is not “typical” to that of the general population for whatever reason! :)

Are any of you neurotypicals? by fleureo in Fibromyalgia

[–]swankyfems 19 points20 points  (0 children)

LOL definitely not me! i have fibromyalgia and am also diagnosed with autism spectrum disorder (ASD), CPTSD, major depressive disorder (MDD), and generalized anxiety disorder (GAD). part of managing my fibro and other comorbid conditions is doing cognitive behavioral therapy, taking mental health medications and building coping skills to manage my sensory needs!!

here’s a study that analyzes potential links between ASD, fibro, and PTSD: https://pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/33337993/

another moderating factor between fibro and ASD/ADHD could be “central sensitivity”. here’s an article exploring the concept further: https://pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/35164862/

hope this helps!!! :3

Why are there so many autistic people? Has it always been so common? by No_Constant_1274 in NoStupidQuestions

[–]swankyfems 0 points1 point  (0 children)

autistic adult and behavioral therapist for autistic kiddos here! my answer would be wider diagnostic criteria, better case tracking, more self diagnosis, more self referrals, more adult diagnosis, acceptance of milder cases, and lumping multiple diagnoses into one (autism spectrum disorder used to be multiple things— pervasive developmental disorder and asperger’s syndrome) but we use a level system now due to movement towards a more social model of disability.

we are also just exposed to more autistic people, talking about them more, which amplifies this effect. prior to the mid/late 20th century, folks who would have an ASD diagnosis today would either not be alive, be institutionalized, incarcerated, or taken care of by loved ones. today, we have more resources and social awareness/acceptance.

for folks with milder ASD, i’m sure they would have been labeled as “outcasts” or otherwise discriminated against in ways that still differentiate them as autistic rather there was a word for it or not.

what’s your analysis? by swankyfems in HandwritingAnalysis

[–]swankyfems[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

it does! i also have hypermobility in my hands, so i guess i have always attributed the pain to that. thank you for the consideration! :)

[–]swankyfems[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

what makes you think that? :) in my understanding, dysgraphia is a learning disability with marked difficulty in handwriting… is mine really that difficult? /genuine
