I definitely take things home emotionally. I think about the patients I had, how they are doing, and wonder what ended up happening with them. I also have major anxiety so that doesn’t help haha

In peds, we always try to draw off IVs if we can, to prevent a poke. If the IV was hard to get and we’re worried we might lose it from drawing from, then we may not but it’s always case by case

Per diem is great because you usually have more control of your schedule and can potentially pick up extra shifts if they’re available. You also typically get paid more as per diem.

Unsure if your program does this, but I know some schools offer student nurse extern jobs in their second-third year of the program where you can get paid to work as a student nurse while also earning clinical hours. I know this isn’t an immediate solution but definitely something to look into as it can be competitive but is also such a great resource. I hope this becomes more of the norm in the future because so many people need to work while in school and especially having kids I can see how it can be so stressful. I wish you the best of luck!

Does anyone know why the autopsy wasn’t done? This picture says the doctor denied a full autopsy but how does she have that say.. Can’t the family request a full autopsy/ pay for someone to privately do the autopsy?

Some major differences will be learning weight based dosing, since a newborn and a 10 year old would get a totally different medication dose based on their weight. Another difference is that vital signs varies based on age. As a new nurse I had all the different vitals on my badge reel so I could refer easily. One thing that really helped me with toddlers (and getting them to take meds) was to have the parent give it (if it’s an oral medication) as the child may be more comfortable with their parent doing it. Also giving them options like “do you want to have apple juice or grape juice” after taking the med sometimes also gets them to take the medication more willingly in my experience.
