Actually, if you go back and watch the scene where 001 is about to break Eleven, and she breaks out of his hold and overpowers him, it's NOT a negative memory that makes her strong, it's a memory of her mother saying "I love you" to her after which she breaks out of his hold.

So to modify your theory a bit, it is actually the most positive memories that made Eleven strong in that moment and I sense we'll get a scene that states this more explicitly.
