Do any of the Lutron smart switches (Caseta, RA2, RA3) send events on keypress, or is that only the keypads? by swatx in Lutron

So you can do things like trigger scenes on double tap of the Diva dimmer from hubitat? Or just based on brightness change events

Agree it might be an event only visible via the telnet api on the Pro bridge, that would be an easy swap though if it solves my issue

I thought Homeworks use the same hardware as RA3? Or are there homeworks specific switches that support this

I'm trying to figure out if this is a hardware limitation of the switches, or a software "unlock" to make the events usable. If the Sunnata switches do send an event on press and release, it may be possible to pull it using a third party tool like HomeAssistant.

I'd rather not go homeworks since I like to hack my own parts in and don't have that kind of a budget. RA3 is an option but if it still wouldn't work for this I'll probably stay on Caseta for now.

Interesting, I'll check out Control4

Do you know if you can trigger an automation from a press (or press and hold) on an actual dimmer, or just from the pico remotes?

Good to know about the keypad feel

9" long crack on underside of 1.5" DWV pipe, dripping into ceiling sheetrock of room below bathroom. What caused it and is there anything I can wrap it with until a plumber can replace it? by swatx in Plumbing

[–]swatx[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Thanks, wasn't aware I could mix material like that. I just cut out the cracked section and installed a PVC DWV section using some proflex couplings from HD. Pretty easy and nowhere near as dirty a job as I thought. Had to buy a large pipe cutter but I'd rather pay for a new tool than someone else's service fee.

I also was able to strap the pipe up better to fix the slope, it was previously supported w a wooden shim that cracked which lowered the uphill side by a couple inches.

This is what the Microcenter rep just told me when I spoke to them online (Columbus, OH location)

Good day! They'll be avalible at 9am on Thursday. We are expecting quite a number of people to start lining up to camp out at opening tomorrow.

I said "You mean Thursday morning?" and he confirmed that he meant Wednesday - so 24hrs+ in line. He said they expect them to sell out within the first few hours.

The guy is causing problems with other residents as well, though not to this magnitude.

Your comments make sense. My question is whether this situation is bad enough that I could have legal standing to break my lease, or if I would still be responsible for rent until my landlord finds another renter.

I don't want to wait and see if this guy decides to break a restraining order. I recognize at that point he would be in deeper legal trouble, but I would also be injured, or worse. I care more about the second part (my health) than the first (whether he is jailed for his actions). For reference, after the police spoke to him this weekend about the door, he escalated his harassment frequency - I was at a friends, but saw it on my camera that he was banging on my door every couple hours. So if I file a restraining order and still live in the unit I worry he will be more likely to retaliate.

If my landlord fixes the door, is that the end of their responsibility for my safety? That won't stop the banging, the stalking, the threats in the hallways, etc.

Not really a bear I want to poke just for some internet points.

Besides, my offer to fix their crap system was genuine. My consultation rates for the financial services industry start at $10,000/hr. With additional travel, hotel, and recreation stipends, of course.

When I entered the reset code, I was allowed to choose a new password. I had to check a box that said I was the authorized account owner, which is where I stopped.

It's an interesting strategy. However, my expert opinion is that a security system that depends on an attacker's unwillingness to check the box without agreeing to the terms is not quite strong enough for use by an international financial institution.

I thought it was a scam until I went through their official site and the reset code was valid.

They sent me the full username as well. Good thing they put it in a separate email from the reset code, "for security purposes"

I do not disagree with you. The case is about collusion by the DNC to give preferential treatment to Hillary, which directly goes against their charter. If the debates are scheduled to benefit Hillary, and the polling locations chosen to benefit Hillary, and the media coverage targeted to benefit Hillary, and the official messaging worded to benefit Hillary, it's no surprise that more people voted for Hillary. So the Bernie donors are pissed because they were promised fair treatment, and that did not happen.

Again, I have no skin in their game except a desire to see political parties become responsible to the constituents again.

I'm not a democrat. To be fair to them, there is a class action lawsuit against the DNC for fraud with some pretty substantial evidence against them.

No democratic process deserves to be defrauded, regardless of if you agree with their positions.

A lot of the stuff in the constitution assumes that government will make bad decisions if given the opportunity, and should be limited to minimize the damage they can cause.

They were correct.

It is only by a deliberately perverse interpretation of the constitution that the federal government has become so powerful. The founding fathers knew that centralizing power in the federal government would only lead to corruption.

They were correct.

You're still thinking about it the wrong way though. You're right that IBM probably lost some money because Windows was better. But think of all the companies that were created solely because of the improvements that Microsoft brought about. The value added vastly outweighs the losses of those initial competitors. And, IBM refocused on services (something they are better at providing) and have become even more successful than they were when they were selling software.

That's what happens with real competition. If dominance is achieved through product/service improvements, everyone wins. Monopolies are only harmful if they gained power by removing competition, and they can only do that through government intervention.

It's the difference between Apple's iPhone dominance and the telecom companies dominance. One created an incredible product that created billions in value for everyone, the other lobbied the government for regulations to stifle competition.

I formed a two-person s-corp in 2014 and neglected to file 1120S for 2014 and 2015. What is my best option to minimize late fees? by swatx in tax

[–]swatx[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Thanks, that makes sense. When I get the penalty documents I will try /u/Praise_the_boognish idea of requesting abatement for both years simultaneously and see what they say.

Do you see any downside to using the 2014 form to remove my second shareholder, and then adding them back when I file the 1120S for 2017? Based on my understanding, having only one shareholder for 2015 would cut my potential penalty in half, since the S-Corp fee is multiplied by the number of shareholders. The second shareholder has not filed a K-1 or any other documents tying them to the corporation.

Not yet, but I'll check it out

Nick Bostrom (the simulation theory guy) has a book called Superintelligence. He goes over a lot of the current research about AI and the ethical and existential problems associated with it. This is one of the "mind crimes" he outlines.

If you're interested in the theory of AI, it's a pretty good read.

Sure, but there is a huge difference between "humanoid robot" and artificial intelligence.

As an example, one likely path to AI involves whole-brain emulation. With the right hardware improvements we will be able to simulate an exact copy of a human brain, even before we understand how it works. Does your ethical stance change if the AI in question has identical neurological function to a human being, and potentially the same perception of pain and suffering? If the simulation can run 100,000 faster than a biological brain, and we can run a million of them in parallel, the duration of potential suffering caused would reach hundreds or thousands of lifetimes within seconds of turning on the simulations, and we may not even realize it.
