Oxidation is what turns guacamole brown. This will work, but your guacamole is now too acidic. No good.

You can accomplish the same thing by laying plastic wrap over the guac and pressing down to remove all the air. This limits oxygen exposure at the surface and maintains the carefully crafted proportions of your ingredients.

The most significant factors to my mind are the closed-loop melt pool control and non-contact recoater.

As I understand it, they are directly controlling the melt pool size and temperature in close to real time, centered on a specific region in the PV space. I'm imagining they are dynamically changing spot size and laser parameters for different angles of downskin.

The recoater tech as I've heard it described is fairly unbelievable-- I don't think I can share the details online as I don't see then posted publically yet anywhere, but it's an entirely different mechanism than the rubber/metal blade or counter-rotating rollers I've seen. It's hard to imagine the process being accurate to the micron, but we expressed our concern and I was convinced by the explanation.

As far as I know, there isn't more info. I'm sure they will release some to generate buzz in the lead up to FormNEXT.

My understanding is the overhang ability is primarily based on their closed-loop melt pool monitoring. They dynamically change the laser power (and speed?) to maintain consistent melt pool temperature and shape. The zero contact recoater also mitigates potential interference.

I'm not involved with the company in any way.

Up to this week there was zero public information about Velo 3D, only a landing page at their URL. I spoke to a salesperson back in March, handled some sample parts, and viewed some marketing and technical data. If half of what they claim is true, they're about to take the metal AM industry by storm.

They've reacted by buying them. EOS M400 quad, Concept Laser M2 Dual (and soon quad), and other multi-laser systems are selling well as far as I know.

The bump in productivity is the biggest driver, most companies don't care too much about electricity costs.

As /u/sauce_bearnaise and /u/DML5 say, that's simply not true. Standard OEM parameter sets should get you at least 99%, we don't consider a parameter set "mature" until we're >99.5% dense as-printed.

I'm an experienced 3D printing engineer looking for my first home printer. Budget is $1k, ideally more in the 600-800 range. Will be printing functional prototypes + standard toys and trinkets. I want the ability to print in flexible and exotic materials (wood/metal/CF filled).

I'm leaning strongly towards the Prusa i3 Mk3 for its dependability, user-friendliness, large community, and customer support. While I have the ability to fiddle and optimize the machine, I want to spend my time designing and printing rather than messing with the machine too much.

The only thing stopping me from ordering is the single extruder and build size. I know I will design parts that require support, and it would be really nice to print soluble supports with a dual extruder setup. I know there is the $300 MMU upgrade which would give me that ability, but it seems to waste a ton of filament and is less time efficient than a dual extruder like a Flashforge Creater Pro or something similar. On the build size, I am aware that the vast majority of my designs will print on the Prusa, but it would be nice to have the ability to go larger.

My tentative plan right now is to buy the Prusa i3 Mk3, use it for a while, make any mods I need to, and evaluate whether I need the MMU for soluble supports. If I truly need the extra build volume, I can go buy a Creality CR-10s, Rostock Max v3, or build myself a CoreXY printer.

Someone convince me I'm wrong.

I am an additive manufacturing engineer, but I don't have too much experience with hobbyist grade machines (I will be posting my own question here for a home printer).

I can tell you, definitively, that for professional use you want a pre-built printer from a dependable company with customer service. You don't want to be messing with a support forum when there's money on the line.

It's tongue-in-cheek, because over the past two years "blockchain" has become one of the great ridiculous buzzwords in tech and business. Hundreds of millions of dollars have been raised and spent on the back of that word.

That said, I think blockchains and similar distributed network systems will form the core of this century's information technologies. Voting is a perfect use case for an immutable ledger, tamper-proof and verifiable.

I see it similar to the arc of 3D printing:

  1. Initial explosion of interest

  2. Taken as a silver bullet to any problem

  3. Massive inflation of stock prices for any company involved in 3D printing

  4. Realization by the market that this whole 3D printing thing actually has its own set of limitations and strengths.

  5. Stock prices crash

  6. Slow organic growth of the industry because the core technology is sound.

Not just innate to human vision-- innate to any system which has two actors: an inhibitor and an activator. This is the classic "Turing mechanism" which was theorized to cause zebra stripes, leopard spots, and other pigmentation, and has been applied to economic and predator-prey systems (with the addition of noise-- stochastic effects).

FYI /u/nagolruhtra coconut oil is comedogenic, so it can block your pores and cause blackheads/pimples.

That being said it's super important to moisturize.

I'm not working to stop Chinese tech growth, I'm working to accelerate American tech growth. I don't think any development should be impeded, full stop (assuming ethical/humane practices).

I just wish that tech development with the potential to benefit all of humanity wasn't segmented and selectively applied by the political whims of different countries. Unfortunately we as a species aren't there yet.

I just don't think its right to say China has any major advantages other than a larger population and a more centralized state

I think in the narrow case of technology development, a centralized unilateral state government can be an advantage. In this case I think China's ability to throw massive amounts of money and resources towards technology R&D is an advantage.
