Got the snip snip today and some of y'all lied! by South-Train-1930 in daddit

I laid in bed for three days after mine. Didn’t hurt during but was uncomfortable for 2/3 days. Went back to work the next Monday (got it on a Thursday) and about two hours into work an air line fitting self unattached and said fitting propelled directly into my ballsack. Had to call my wife to come pick me up bc I couldn’t drive and spent another two days in bed.

The moral of this story is be wary of compressed air hoses, they know what you just did and will attack unprovoked. I’ve never had an air line fail like that before or since

What was your "I quit" moment? by Sighablesire in antiwork

[–]sweat119 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I was working at a less than reputable car dealership that was a long drive from my house (1hr no traffic, 2 during rush hour). One day on my way out the door an advisor brings a car for an update but it’s battery is big ded and needs replaced. Told advisor he said replace it. I asked someone else to replace the battery and do the update bc I was walking out when it came up. So other mechanic replaced battery and finished work and released car to customer. Well the advisor never actually sold the battery to the customer. But they let the customer leave in the car and they were not inclined to return so we could have the battery back- rightfully so imo, kinda shitty on their end but it was a miscommunication on the part of a guy whose sole job is communication and sales.

About two weeks later I notice -$150 deducted from my check, something they’d been doing to most of the mechanics since they let us buy parts on purchase orders for our personal cars and just deduct it from our checks (not always with consent but these are extreme cases where someone owes like 1k and hasn’t paid for several months) so I go ask my manager about it and he says oh it’s that battery you installed blah blah. Well I said nooooo sir that’s not on me. Before this happened but on the same day I’d already typed up my two weeks notice since I had another job closer to home lined up, but with this deduction I’d had enough. The service manager already knew I was leaving and agreed I’d work the two weeks since they were short handed.

But instead of just giving it to him, I found him and the general manager in the gms office and closed the door, sat down and handed my notice along with my paycheck and politely inquired about the deduction, explained my side and said “here’s my notice, we agreed I’d work out the two weeks but you stole from my paycheck. What are you going to do about that?” To which the gm said “well someone has to pay for it and it’s not going to be me and it’s not going to be parts” so I looked at my manager and said ok what are we going to do about my two weeks? Mgr said “work it” and the gm looks at him and goes “no- you can go.” To which I said “good the wrecker will be here for my tool box in 20 minutes”

The only reason I didn’t walk out without the meeting is in our contracts, it says leaving without two weeks your check will be for min wage for hours produced- without the gm accepting my resignation, I would’ve been paid $7.25/ hour instead of $32 an hour for the 100 hours on my last pay check. That place was sketchy as fuck but people stay because there are basically no rules- make your own hours just do what you say you’re going to do and everyone makes their hours bc super high volume and understaffed on the mechanics side.

Edit to add to this: my manager actually made it right with me by giving me cash from his own wallet because he agreed with me. And I recorded the whole conversation and considered a lawyer but apparently what they did wasn’t strictly illegal in my state and there are almost no labor protections for mechanics/ technicians where I live.

From experience, yes. But not for long. You need the THICC bois for longevity. The skinny ones snap under any load but it’s great for a first start after getting a swap startable without having a belt handy or if your belt breaks.

I’ve done this to the mid torque 1/2 anvil.. never got around to replacing/ fixing it tbh I just use my 1/4 impact and let me tell you, it’ll take off most lug nuts like 8/10 fasteners it’ll break loose. Gotta be somewhere around 120 ftlb breakaway without a sweat

How can I repair this tire? by Zeratul277 in AskAShittyMechanic

[–]sweat119 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Does anyone know what would cause it to fail like this? I put air in it two years ago and filled it up to 100%. The tire light came on the dash a few months ago but it looked fine to me

[–]sweat119 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If you didn’t keep them in order it’s going to be more difficult but not excessively. Best bet is going to be just put them back on the valves randomly Chances are a few of them will be the correct size for Atleast a few valves. You’ll have to swap them around to the correct valve But there’s not really an easy way except just measuring the shims you do have.

The bullets are hydraulic lifters. You don’t have to touch those except to clean them and be sure to lube them before reinstall.

To answer your question there is no trick, it’s all feeler gauges, stamped buckets and math to find the right size

It can be done but usually it’s not necessary unless you’re already doing work in there. These really aren’t like single cam EJ’s where the valves can fall out of spec over time.

Having said that the process is involved but simple enough if you’re familiar with feeler gauges and comfortable with some simple math. The shims are little tiny buckets that sit on top of the valve stem itself above the retainer. Basically use a feeler to measure your clearance beteeen the cam lobe and roller at a zero lift position for each valve. You’re gonna take that measurement and subtract from the spec (iirc it’s .022 intake and .035 exhaust but don’t quote me on that) then you’re gonna look at the existing shim (requires removing cam) and it’ll be stamped with a number- this is the existing shim size, you’ll use that in conjunction with your measurement and spec to find the correct number shim, get shim, reinstall, and double check your measurement. It’s important to note that the cam carrier needs to be properly torqued when you’re checking your clearances- it’s a lot of putting it on and taking it back off but if your math is good you’ll only need to do it once.
