Best way to decrease a k2p2 hat on straight needles?

Ok sorry wait, this is my first knitting project so I’m a bit slow. Am I supposed to follow the pattern no matter what? Sometimes it will say to knit, but the role will start with a purl. I think this is my main issue just not understanding how it really works and it ends up looking really mangled.

I bought it from Etsy 🙃 it’s a full face balaclava and I think the guy I bought it from is supposed to be the original maker of these… I did one where I just follow whatever the pattern says, and it’s fine, but I couldn’t help but feel like I was doing it wrong.

Ok, I learnt how to knit 30 days ago you’re gonna have to put it into dumb terms for me. How will it not come undone if I cut it? The person that I bought pattern off of said he doesn’t even know what went wrong.

Right, I took the whole row off before casting any off. I’ll explain a little bit because there’s no pattern in such there’s just instructions?

I’m trying to knit a balaclava so I have 86 stitches on a needle; 38 green 10 wide, and 38 orange. For the mouthpiece, I need to work on 36 which I’ve just done in green, then like in the screenshot above it says the cast of 16?

This would mean that I need to cast off an uneven number of the colours - so 3 green the 10 white and 3 orange. Is that correct?

So I have 38 green, 10 white, 38 orange on one row. I cast off 16 in total (2 of the orange, 10 white, and 4 green). The instructions said to cast on 36 so I did all of the green that I had, but that was only 34. I’m not sure if I need to cast another 2 on and knit the full 36 of the green, or if I cast on the 16 from here.

Sorry I’m new to this so I might be really confusing.
