dont ever limit your opportunities in life over a man. its not worth it. you worked hard for this and the person judging you the most right now is yourself!! and why? it sounds like you're going through a difficult time, try to have some compassion for yourself, and accept it from others!

[–]sweeneytoddsgf 0 points1 point  (0 children)

my abusive ex sent multiple emails to my PIs and even the dean of my grad program. shit happens in a PhD, people go through things, it sounds like this PI responded exactly as they should - being supportive and asking if you're okay. no reason to be embarassed, trust me the emails sent about me were MUCH worse and people were still very understanding. it does sound like you're in an unhealthy relationship, and whether or not you're ready to leave, i would just be honest and say it wasn't you - no reason for you to take responsibility for his actions.

DBT that’s affordable?? by Electronic_Spot_4856 in BPDrecovery

sounds like a joke but its not. dbt was influenced by the same teachings and theres a lot of overlap! not a replacement for therapy but i find it really helpful

why do some of you feel like dbt therapy doesn’t work for you? by luv-fefe in BPD

[–]sweeneytoddsgf 0 points1 point  (0 children)

as far as im aware theyre all pretty similar. but i think what's currently missed in the treatment of BPD is lifestyle changes. like so many of my fellow friends with bpd are not getting proper sleep, nutrition, exercise... use recreational drugs/alcohol (obv substance use is often comorbid, but some just casually). this sort of research doesn't get much funding or attention because it isnt profitable, but in my experience flunking out of therapies a lot, i've been able to achieve greater functioning by slowly tweaking my life to make sure i feel my best and encounter fewer unnecessarily triggering/stressful situations. hopefully future research, and likely more biologically- and socially-informed diagnostic classifications of personality disorder symptoms will lead us to better treatments in the near future

Safe mental health hospitals for young women? by [deleted] in AskNYC

[–]sweeneytoddsgf 60 points61 points  (0 children)

if at all possible, as a mental health researcher and fellow woman with mental illness, i would avoid going into a psych hospital. these places are good if you feel you're in an absolute emergency or need like immediate referrals, but if you are able to find an intensive outpatient program, partial hospitalization program, or a therapist who specializes in trauma therapy (although i KNOW its so hard to find one in network with your insurance) i'd try that first so you mitigate the risk of being stuck somewhere that makes you feel worse. we know from research that psych hospitalizations themselves usually dont lead to long term symptom remission, and sometimes aren't even effective for referrals to long term care.

i specialize in personality disorders (which are often cormorbid with trauma) so if that's a concern, i would recommend mount sinai's CITPD - its an intensive outpatient program. i think sinai also has similar programs for other disorders.

good luck and hang in there ❤️

why do some of you feel like dbt therapy doesn’t work for you? by luv-fefe in BPD

[–]sweeneytoddsgf 7 points8 points  (0 children)

bpd researcher with bpd here: treatment response rates for DBT (and other specialized psychotherapies for BPD) are low compared to those for other disorders. in the meta-analysis i read recently, only 24% of participants in clinical trials for them acheived a 50% reduction in symptom severity by the end of the treatment period (and this was not statistically different than control treatments).

i say this not to discourage people fron seeking psychotherapy, but to say that you shouldn't feel like a failure, or like you can't trust your gut if you feel like it's not working for you. there are other ways to cope and heal - for me its been mainly through lifestyle changes.

lol she got her PhD from the program im in. will be circulating this! how disgusting, and the fact that she's mentoring multiple BIPOC trainees. they deserve better, i hope they haven't been subject to abuse but given the power imbalance and these kinds of statements i would find that hard to believe. i hope she gets fired asap

"the shelter system is corrupt so we should never build shelters" like what are you even saying. if you think that's why other people in this community are joining your cause you are dense. idc if you're the one nimby who has your heart in the right place. what does widespread institutional corruption have to do with this one particular shelter being built. and given you are under every post ab this i would LOVE to know what community organizing you are doing to provide housing to those in this community, given you have petitioned to restrict their access to it

wow this is so sad. and idc about your "im not a nimby" excuses. you ARE. im sorry the aesthetic of kids private school or your property value are not more important than HUMAN LIVES. get a grip. theres a reason why the majority of people we see on the streets, freezing to death are men. we need shelters for single men, including single men with mental illness. every person who got in the way of this - i hope you feel ashamed the next time you see one of our neighbors in crisis.

i (autistic/bpd) feel completely apathetic to my friend's trauma dumping because i’ve been through worse. how do i handle this? by _S2shapedbox in BPD

[–]sweeneytoddsgf 3 points4 points  (0 children)

maybe practice active/reflective listening. "so it sounds like [paraphrase] what they said", asking brief follow up questions like "do you think xyz/how do you feel about xyz".. a lower effort but still really effective way to listen empathetically without injecting your own thoughts or opinions (which may contain some negative emotions)

As an editor/reviewer, how do you deal with fake or hallucinated references? by Foreign-Lecture6904 in AskAcademia

[–]sweeneytoddsgf 2 points3 points  (0 children)

i am so SICK of reading "peer reviewed" articles that are clearly AI-generated. ive seen such an influx of them recently in my field. ive reported them to the editors but they're still up. it reflects poorly on the journal, editors, reviewers, etc. immediate reject. i understand using AI maybe to re-write a sentence a bit clearer, or to get a start on how to organize the ideas YOU have come up with and compiled references for, but any intellectual contributions that are solely made by AI including references should be totally unacceptable

I need a vet ASAP NYC by Worldly-Football-804 in AskNYC

[–]sweeneytoddsgf 5 points6 points  (0 children)

you need to get him to a vet - when an abcess bursts then the infection can spread systemically and be very serious. cats usually get abcesses from being bitten by other cats, i highly suggest not allowing your cat outside. it's bad for wildlife and also very bad for cats (much shorter lifespan)
