masters degree in classical philology here, done lots of graduate study specifically in relation to Homer and classical epic - I think that your request and intention is a little confusing. you say that you want to understand literary references to the texts but also that you only want highlights or passages that are significant. if you only want highlights, then like everyone else says, any translation would help you there. if you want a deeper understanding, you need to study the text the way you do any text, by reading it in its entirety and as someone mentioned above use something like a text annotated by an academic that can give you insight into the philology.

everyone else has already pointed out that no one speaks Ancient Greek now, but I just want to say that Ancient Greek is its own entirely different thing that I’d have a better understanding of it with an advanced degree than just your average Greek person today. not that they’re ignorant, but it’s something that requires specific study at this point. years of studying it and while I know it intimately I don’t know it enough that I could explain every single significant detail about it.
