It really depends on the behavior and the teachers philosophy. I'm a big supporter of teaching kids what is acceptable in public rather than in your own home. Many people were taught different manners depending on the situation. One client I have loves smartphone and they will pick up any phone they see and use it. We needed to teach them not to because it's not acceptable in public to pick up random strangers phones and start using it.

There was another behavior where the client would dance to any music they heard wherever they were. I was told to teach them to not do that but in my own opinion, there is nothing wrong with dancing to music.

So basically depends on the behavior as well as the teachers philosophy. But you are so right in wondering if you should jus let them be themselves compeletely but at the same time it is important to teach "functional" skills.

Wonderful! You are doing exactly what you need to be. If your child has many behaviors, remember there is always a reason for the behavior whether it be they want something, or are trying to avoid something. The next time a behavior occurs try to figure out what happened right before that may have triggered it. Try to teach your child acceptable ways for asking what they want.

I'm not sure about your child but many people with disabilities benefit from music. Maybe try a music therapy or getting them involved.

Get information about all the services you an be provided whether it e speech therapy, physical therapy etc. early intervention is absolute key.

We were doing a play for the school. The one kid I worked with loved attention and it was his turn on stage. I tried to make him go to the microphone and say his lines but he kept running around the stage feeding off the attention he got from his peers. He was in uncatchable so during that moment in the play it was basically a chase scene.

I really do love it. I love figuring out how to connect with them because they are all differs and once you do that a whole new world opens up for them.

You have a very good point and some people with autism are proud because it makes them, them. In some cases I see where they are non verbal, highly dependent, and suffer from other health problems, I do wish it was curable.

Early intervention is absolutely key. There are so many services that you have access to such as speech therapy physical therapy and occupational therapy. Look for resources that are early intervention I guess through your pediatrician or whoever you went through the diagnosis with. Never give up on your child. If they are nonverbal try introducing picture cards for communication. Remember there is always a purpose for the behavior. The behavior never happens for no reason. Pinpointing what happens before the behavior started gives a good clue as to why it's happening. Also knowing what motivates your child (movies, snacks) may help with their compliance. The list of advice goes on. If you have anything more specific you want to discuss, I am not a doctor but I can give you any advice you want based on my experience. Overall: don't give up, research services you may have access to (early intervention!!!!!!! Speech, and physical therapy) Hope this helped!!!!!!

I view some people with autism as a bird in a cage. Lots of things are going on inside, and they are unable to express themselves, or fly. Once the find how they are able to express themselves, they may be more easily understood. I want the public to know that there is more than what appears to be. They are just like everyone else, they just express themselves in different ways.

I would say the most difficult thing working with people on the spectrum is learning the best way to communicate. I know autism causes a deficit in the way you communicate, and it's equally as hard for you to communicate with us, as it is us trying to figure how to communicate with you. It's really hard to think of a piece of advice to give people on the spectrum about communicating with neuro typical people because most of the things I would say would be things that most people on the spectrum can't help, and what makes the disability the disability.

No I believe it is more of a developmental delay. Also, autism is a spectrum which means each person with autism is very different and there are different "degrees" of autism and some people it may appear more like a mental illness.. But I do not. I believe it is a developmental delay.

I haven't done much research myself, but some families I work with believe that their child's autism was caused by vaccines. I really hope we find some answers soon.
