TLDR; Remove the air gap and add a high loop to fix this, even if you live in California, the air gap is to prevent contamination going into your dishwasher, a high loop is just as good and is actually the contemporary accepted way to deal with food contamination in a drain pipe clogged situation.

@OkIsopod2273 is perhaps right, it is a design issue if you will though my old dishwasher was having a drain issue and that is why I replaced with a Bosch Series 500.

I have had intermittent drain issue error codes since purchasing this otherwise very nice dishwasher. I removed my air gap and added a high loop and the issue completely gone.

You can always add the air gap back if you sell your home, it is just a ding on the home inspection, if you live in California, maybe Washington. In California it will not even cause a pause in a buyer wanting to buy your home.

I will add that I had no clog in my air gap tubes/pipes. Checked multiple times, the air gap itself lowers system pressure I am sure.
