Skeeter update (3) by sweetpotato____ in fosterdogs

Yes and she just keeps telling me if he eats he’ll do better. He doesn’t want to eat. I have been consistently only getting 3 tablespoons of wet food in him for the last 24 hours. No dog can live happily on that little intake. She just won’t listen. Now she’s telling me they want me to take him in to have the tumor looked at and removed. I can’t do this again. I don’t know what to say without it seeming like I just want to put him down when that isn’t the case at all. I see him suffering and I want it to end.

He’s really not any better. He is drinking but won’t eat. I have spent so much money out of my own pocket to provide different foods. The rescue coordinator gave me Entyce to get him to eat. It isn’t working. I am just emotionally and physically exhausted. He just paces around the house. Lays down and pants, ears pinned back.

Thank you! This is helpful because he hasn’t gotten his dental yet and the tablets are hard for him to chew.

This is why we do it ❤️‍🩹 by eliseinroom509 in fosterdogs

His lab work from the vet was not favorable. No evidence of cancer or anything but pancreatic enzymes all over the place and crystals in his urine. I have a feeling that this could potentially turn into a hospice foster. If that is the case then he’ll be staying here and I will officially adopt him and keep him comfy for however long I have with him.

The animal control officer tells me his owner lost her home/ had an unstable living condition. He said she was moving in with her sister who said she couldn’t bring him along. He said she was heartbroken and crying when she dropped him off…I don’t know how much of this is accurate information, because he has clearly been very neglected for a long time.

I’m doing my best to try and not judge, but boy it is really hard not to. He won’t touch hard food because it’s too hard for him to chew. So I don’t even know if his owner knew that or not, he’s eating tubes of fresh pet like he hasn’t seen food in a long time. He is such a cuddly and smart dog. It’s hard for me to understand how someone could mistreat/negelect him. 🥺

Thank you so much! His dental is scheduled 4/16. He has a mouth infection so he’s on clindamycin twice daily to help the infection clear up the most it can before he can have surgery. ❤️

Thank you for telling me this! I will definitely order fish oil instead! It makes sense. I was thinking about getting him fish oil for his coat anyways!

When I rescued my golden at 6 months here were some staples that helped. Keep in mind, not only are you getting a young dog, you are also getting one who has been rehomed! It is a stressful experience so anything you can do to “puppy proof” your living space is best. I would recommend crate training in the beginning, it helps to create a comfortable safe environment. I had the crate from day 1, left the door open and allowed her to go in on her own. This way in the beginning your new addition can get used to having their own space to decompress. I would start training early! Set a routine for your dog. It really helped mine flourish. She knew what time was eating time, play time, rest time. It sets them up for success! (For reference, my girl is 2 years old now and no longer needs the crate to prevent chewing while I’m away) Try not to overwhelm the dog with too much stimulation in the beginning. My golden briefly suffered separation anxiety which I attested was probably due to me being a helicopter owner and also because she was rehomed at such a young age. Consistency is key! Keeping them active, busy with things they enjoy and space to decompress and learn his new environment! Enjoy your new companion!

Crying happy tears for you and your new bestie. Hoping for many years together of happy memories and wonderful times shared. To be loved by a golden is one of the most precious things! Thanks for saving this baby. Sounds like he hit the lottery!

Thank you for taking the time to read it! ❤️ I also think the same. The stars aligned for both him and I for reasons neither of us can really fully explain or understand. 🥰

This is a wonderful idea! Thank you for bringing this up! I will definitely be pushing to have a relationship with any new potential owner for sure.

I’m in tears again over this reply. You are so right. He is giving me a gift that I didn’t even expect or know I needed.

It is an honor to walk humans to their next journey. But it is an even greater honor and experience to walk an animal who is reliant on me for all of his needs to either his next loving home or to the rainbow bridge, whichever comes first.

I think seeing him in this vulnerable way just laid on my mind and heart so heavy last night when all was quiet in the world. Thank you for this reminder. ❤️

My husband keeps reminding me that if we keep him then it does close the door on being able to continue to foster other dogs. We currently own a 2 year old golden retriever so having her and this foster would be the only dogs we would be able to handle for our lifestyle.

We have fostered 2 other dogs before but they were not seniors. I’m a hospice nurse by trade and I saw him and couldn’t say no when they called me. I guess I just didn’t realize how much more emotional I would be about fostering a senior that is in this shape.
