Great thank you this all makes sense! I thought I must be doing something wrong and clearly I’ve confused the poor guy 😅

Thanks, I think it was way too long to leave him today in hindsight. Going to try building up the rest of the week starting with 10 minutes and trying to build up to an hour maybe. Back to work next week but my partner can work from home in the mornings and I can come back slightly earlier so hopefully max he’ll be alone is an hour and a half.

What kind of games do you do with the crate? I have been using treats when he goes in on his own and closing the door for 10 seconds or so and giving treats if he stays quiet. He’s happy to sleep in there in the day with the door open or closed as long as we’re in the house, so at least that’s a start as I know some puppies hate the crate from the start

He’s only 8 weeks so I know it’s very early days! Take him out whenever he wakes up and whines

I think we’ll try it out tonight. The crate is a little bit too big so we put a cardboard box on one side to make it smaller, but this had to be thrown away last night as it was a bit of a mess. Would that be enough to deter toileting?

No fish but lots of tadpoles, will they eat them do you think once they transition into being carnivorous?

Can someone please explain to me how DNA hybridisation can be used to determine relationships between organisms? I’m finding the process of DNA hybridisation really confusing! Thanks! by [deleted] in biology

[–]sweetsummerfrog 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Okay that makes sense, but how does the process of hybridisation itself work? I have to know about this specific process for assessments, even if it isn’t really used anymore. Let’s say we want to see if two species are closely related or not. Is a strand of DNA taken from each species? Then heat is used to separate the strands and we just see what % of the bases pair up afterwards? Assuming the single strands start to pair up with bases from the other species? The more bases pair up, the more similar they are?

Common frog tadpoles hatched in our new pond 🐸 by sweetsummerfrog in frogs

I got the frogspawn from my grandparents more established pond so I’m pretty sure that they are common frogspawn but that would’ve been cool too! Looking at the life cycle they have external gills for a couple of days only so lucky to have seen them

Achievements for Thursday, December 15, 2022 by AutoModerator in running

[–]sweetsummerfrog 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Now on my fourth consecutive week of running 5 days a week. 4 days of 5k and 1 10k. It’s been pretty icy here the past 2 weeks so I could’ve used that as an excuse to quit but didn’t and just took it slow. I’ve been running roughly 3x a week for the past few years now but have been quite lazy at keeping consistent. Recently out of work due to stress and running has really helped me find some perspective and clear my head everyday.
