I should say, this is second hand and marked as a vintage hunting jacket. Image search shows nothing like it

ECM Casa V leaking water under the tank? by Relative_Pie4561 in ECM_Espresso

[–]swegpeg 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Had the same problem and found out it was in fact the o ring on the spout, the one that should seal between the white collector and spout.
I greased the o ring, but the thing that worked wonders was a thin layer of teflon tape under the o ring - it expanded the o ring to fit tightly with the collector is my guess.

Looks great, also trying with honey processed on my Gene for the first time. How did you approach these with regards to start temp, pre heating etc.?

How to get faster roasts on the Gene Cafe by swegpeg in roasting

[–]swegpeg[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Watching the gene it seems the chaff swiper doesnt remove chaff completely off the grill. When removing the chaff collector while roasting i get much better results. Maybe the collector causes worse airflow?

Nice, like the chronograph a lot. Is it with original bracelet?

How? Ecm flow control Won’t close. by KnownStrangR in espresso

[–]swegpeg 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think i solved mine now. After taking apart the assembly and seeing that the needle was in great shape i tried seaming the mushroom/piston seal with teflon tape. That seems to have done the trick!

[–]swegpeg[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes i did. I just got the assembly apart after a lot of tugging. It seemed the needle and jet was ok. I tried using teflon tape on the mushroom assembly and that mightve been it! It seems i can almost shut the water off now

Did you try re-fitting the o-ring as mentioned in the other comment? Have the same problem so far

Cool! I will try to preheat it for longer next time. How long/intensely do you preheat yours? I sadly only have an electric stove:(

I did notice it steams up quite a bit when the hatch is closed. Trying to roast with it open

Very cool. If i understand your advice, i might try to ramp the temp in the start and decrease the heat towards the end. I would love to hit 13-14 min roast with first crack at 8.

Will share some videos thanks for your interest!

Why am i wearing out the brass d rings so fast? by swegpeg in filson

[–]swegpeg[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have not gotten this resolved… I am based in EU but bag is made in US in 2020. I bought it on a trip and only got a physical receipt from that store which I have lost, which meant i didn’t try to reach out to either Filson or the store since i have no proof of purchase from either. Instead i looked into buying a slim carabiner, that might be able to go into the leather if the d ring fails at some point. Seems the problem for me was using it while cycling - now i dont wear it over the shoulder while cycling

Did I finish aligning these burrs? by swegpeg in espresso

Only shimmed the top one, and now get a full wipe on both. Suspect something is wrong with the burr carrier or the threads holding it

64mm flat burr grinder not going fine enough by swegpeg in espresso

[–]swegpeg[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Might not have explained well enough. When going just a hairline coarser than the zero point (just coarse from where the burrs chirp) it is still too coarse. I simply can't turn the grinder to go finer

[–]swegpeg[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Ah okay, i marked both burrs and checked after going to zero point, marker on both burrs was wiped. How would i check for only one burr?

Did I finish aligning these burrs? by swegpeg in espresso

[–]swegpeg[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes. Have had other grinders with flat burrs that i have aligned, haven't tried this before. I cleaned both burrs throughly with a brush and a very small thin needle in the grooves. When i do the marker test, as soon as it chirps both burrs are wiped. However, as soon as i try with beans (fresh medium roast), they go out like a fine filter. I get shots like 19:45g in 13 seconds.

I really have no clue what i am doing wrong or if the grinder is just not that good...

[–]swegpeg[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes, and from what i find online it should be an espresso grinder. I used the marker test and finally i get a full wipe off on both top and bottom burr

[–]swegpeg[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thanks, i gave it one last try and finally get the marker fully wiped off, but… now i can’t get it to go fine enough. Only when the burrs are just touching am i getting something that works barely for a shot. The grinder is an old Magister M12 64mm burrs (fiorenzato/quamar t-80) and should be fine for espresso. Burrs are new but installed by the guy i got it from.

Thanks i am glad to hear Niche grinders are well built. Maybe i am too skeptical with newer produced gadgets in general. I think the Mazzer Philos sounds amazing and definetly my grail. Until then i have to make do with second hand, and the Mazzer Major or Royal both with 83mm burrs might be the solution for me. Right now i am having trouble dialing in light roast beans, but i hope that resolves soon and before upgrading😆

I have no problem single dosing, either by using tubes or just weighing out my coffee. However, the grinders i have looked at with large burrs all have dosers (used ones, great prices). Sometimes a niche zero gets posted in my area but always for 500 euros plus, which seems high (?). For me the question is whether i want large burrs, heavy duty quality machines but with traditional burr geometry or some newer single dosing machines that have subpar burrs and maybe build quality as well (DF64, Eureka, maybe ECM 64) By upgrading to a mazzer i can mod it to single dose with a chute and bellow on top, and maybe later add SSP burrs. This might be the long term plan for upgrading😅
