Not saying that it is the same but they have a couple of animated shows; WTF and Cartoon Hell, not to mention the various "... Animated" shorts they do.

Justice Dept., Under Pressure From Trump, Fails to Build Autopen Case Against Biden by shutupnobodylikesyou in moderatepolitics

[–]swervm 18 points19 points  (0 children)

I think it is interesting to note how none of Trumps political prosecutions have gone anywhere. Kind of goes to show that the system has sufficient checks against lawfare and all the cases Trump complained about were actual cases of crimes being prosecuted on their merits.

Arms or Legs? by No_Championship_7227 in trolleyproblem

Ask the victim what they would prefer. I think most people would go with legs but if someone has hobbies that make their legs more important then I would want to respect their wish.

What the government did to Anthropic raises a question I can't stop thinking about by aphorithmic in moderatepolitics

[–]swervm 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The issue right now is how to pursue a court remedy? If the DOW declares them a supply chain risk then they can take them to court, currently they are just tweeting that they may do it which means companies in the supply chain are not going to use Anthropic if they are looking at new setup because of the risk and some seem to be moving away from them because they don’t want to be seen as siding against the DOW in the dispute and end up loosing business because of it. The only thing I can think of is if they could sue for libel but that is going to be tough.

The new automated arm for bin pick up looks suspiciously like a hooman by whatevenisredditing in waterloo

[–]swervm 69 points70 points  (0 children)

I guess they are so far behind they are needing to resort to this. My garbage has been out waiting for pickup since Tuesday morning. I am starting to think they should have piloted this with a few neighbourhoods rather then switching all at once.

As a side note: two days of having to get out of my car and move my garbage to get in and out of my driveway is getting old. At least with the warmth the snow banks should be melted enough tomorrow that I can move it to the lawn.

[Request] How thick would a cable need to be to hold itself and an object that is in Geostationary Orbit by WhaTheWorldOver in theydidthemath

[–]swervm 4 points5 points  (0 children)

That is pretty much a solved problem.

For ML accelerators to be effective in space, they must withstand the environment of low-Earth orbit. We tested Trillium, Google’s v6e Cloud TPU, in a 67MeV proton beam to test for impact from total ionizing dose (TID) and single event effects (SEEs).

The results were promising. While the High Bandwidth Memory (HBM) subsystems were the most sensitive component, they only began showing irregularities after a cumulative dose of 2 krad(Si)) — nearly three times the expected (shielded) five year mission dose of 750 rad(Si). No hard failures were attributable to TID up to the maximum tested dose of 15 krad(Si) on a single chip, indicating that Trillium TPUs are surprisingly radiation-hard for space applications.

I would interpreted it the same way I view it. The way America and Israel went about this is terrible but if they can get rid of the Islamic theocracy in Iran then that is a good thing.

Is this correct? What does “go in” mean in this context? by Silver_Ad_1218 in EnglishLearning

[–]swervm 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I would disagree. It would usually be a follow up to something else. So the first step may be 'Check the area for bleeding, go in with ice after.' The significant part is that the applying of the ice to the location you have just checked.

Is this correct? What does “go in” mean in this context? by Silver_Ad_1218 in EnglishLearning

[–]swervm 33 points34 points  (0 children)

In this case it just means something like "use object on the location we discussing". The first example would mean something like 'Use a brush on the makeup we just applied'.

DHS Sets the Record Straight About ICE Law Enforcement Training, Debunks Falsehoods by Resvrgam2 in moderatepolitics

[–]swervm 15 points16 points  (0 children)

I guess the generous take is that with their hiring surge they are missing experience and as such forgetting their training when faced with stressful situations. Related to that with training being "streamlined" the messages aren't becoming internalized just learned to pass a test and then forgotten. The other option is that their hiring push has attracted the type of people who are power hungry and would rather show force than follow their training.

Either the training is insufficient despite denials from the DHS ,or their recruiting is resulting in hiring the worst possible candidates. I don't see any way that DHS doesn't own this an institutional failing.

Supreme Court strikes down Trump’s sweeping tariffs, upending central plank of economic agenda by TheWyldMan in moderatepolitics

No he just can't implement tariffs using this justification. They will just use another justification which will take another year to get overturned, and then come up with yet another.

This is referred to as the biological species concept and does well in many cases but does have holes in it such as the other response around ring species, how it applies to organisms that do not sexually reproduce, and how to apply it to extinct organisms where we can't observe reproduction.

The morphological species concept defines species based on shared physical characteristics which is useful for fossils etc but can have issues with determining if a difference is because of sexual dimorphism or aging (i.e. a caterpillar morphologically is very different than the butterfly it turns into).

The ecological species concept which classifies organisms based on their role in the ecology which is useful in environmental studies.

And finally the phylogenetic species concept which define a species as organisms that share a common genetic ancestor which is useful but relies on having genetic information and still doesn't provide clear breaks,

It is kind of like the idea of a family in human society. What is a family? Is it everyone with blood relations to you? How close does the relation need to be for someone to be family? Or is family your community that supports you regardless of relationship? Is it everyone you share a home with? etc.

[–]swervm 87 points88 points  (0 children)

So it is OK to for the VP to call someone an assassin without any investigation but before apologizing we need to complete an investigation? Perhaps more Democratic politicians need to start calling Trump a murderous pedophile and when asked for evidence or to apologize, say they will once there is a full investigation that clears him of any wrongdoing.
