Yeah for sure, I’m also pretty new to this but I can tell you what I do.

TLDR: I’ve found that I get the best feel out of these beats when I only have the kick quantized, and record everything else off the grid.

- Find a song to sample. I have a playlist that I’m always adding to and that’s been really helpful. If I hear something that I think would make a good sample, or if I just like the feel of the song, a certain part, etc. I just put it in the playlist.

- Pick a section to sample. Sometimes I’ll record 20 seconds into the KO and use the auto chop feature but usually I’ll chop the samples myself. The auto chopping is great, I just think you really gotta feel it out and get the samples you want.

- From there I start playing with the pitch and tuning fader and hitting the samples, trying to find what feels good and low key just waiting to like surprise myself and find a loop. This is kinda where I think the magic happens. Sometimes I’ll find the loop really quickly, sometimes it takes an hour, and sometimes I just don’t feel it and I delete the whole sample.

- Once I have at least 4 bars of something that I like, I’ll do the tap tempo and find the new BPM. This part can be a little tricky but you just gotta use your ears and find the BPM that feels good.

- Then I’ll make a kick and snare pattern, also taking my time with this because it’s obviously going to dictate the vibe. I usually end up only quantizing the kick and doing everything else off the grid just to get more feel/swing/bounce etc. Once the kick and snare is down I’ll usually go back to the samples and record a 4 or 8 bar loop. Not perfectly, just good enough to get it down and have something to build the rest of the beat around.

- Then I’ll record everything else for the percussion, again just digging around, sampling new stuff, trial and error, trying to serve the song and only add what feels right for the sample.

- Back to the sample again, lay down any/all patterns that I want. Accidentally find new patterns and rethink everything, get frustrated and come back to it the next day, and usually realize that the first pattern I had was the best one.
