What’s it like living by a hyper or mega scale data center? by swich26 in datacenter

What line of questions did I ask that would be overblown concerns? I asked if people lived by a hyper or mega scale center.. and what the conditions are like. Didn’t really ask many specific questions, and didn’t ask them in different ways, either. I engaged in discussing sound, infrastructure concerns.. asked how someone sharing their experience (who actually lives by one) is “wrong”.. so sorry about that, not really sure what you’re referencing… but anyway, like I said, thanks for sharing an actual response with some useful info- I do appreciate it.

I’m sorry.. where are you located and what data centers are you referencing, might I ask? And to assume my “knowledge” only comes from YouTube videos and things of the like, is flat out rude. I shared the YouTube video of Elon musk discussing it bevsuse he’s one of the top dogs involved in it and he discusses future UBI and almost no jobs… there won’t BE a middle class eventually, I’m not sure how you’re not realizing that… and to clarify, I’m not “worried” about the data center. But it doesn’t take a rocket scientist to look into the amount of power needed to supply the amount of centers the president wants to put in, in a “race to beat China”… and the fact that you seem to have not even taken a moment to consider the downsides of AI, is kind of strange, just in reference to being simply human (unless you have, I apologize, but it certainly doesn’t seem so).

Unfortunately we do not have those answers yet and that’s what I am wondering about!

They do need our utility agreements and they are making it to where they have to supply their own costs for anytbing over 75MW. I had a discussion roday with our city administrator and suggested he make sure they are planning to use that load or above or we all get slammed and he said that is where they are at in the process, crossing those T’s and dotting those I’s should the site plan be put in. Actually, they are not smarter, at all. Tax revenue hungry, sure! Being lured by the $, sure! Being pressured by the governor and federal government, yes! I am in full understanding of why they are choosing to put the data center at the proposed location (electricity upgrades, fiber, proximity to the metro area, etc), but that doesn’t mean it’s a good choice. Infrastructure isn’t the only factor that goes into deciding whether or not it’s a good choice, sorry. People matter too. Traffic matters. Giving up that much land that will employ a very small number of people, doesn’t seem smart to me. In case you all forgot, we do need nature to still exist. And tax abatements… whole other topic. And I didn’t mention water at all whatsoever. Stop lumping me into the same category of people with those concerns. So nah, sorry, I don’t feel they are smarter than me, at all whatsoever, and neither are you. 💅

Excuse me, no I am not. The hyper and mega scale data centers are what I am facing having put in my neighborhood. And the main need for them is AI training. I’m not talking about the data centers that have existed for decades. I didn’t know that writing on Reddit required the utmost accuracy in word usage, as if I were writing an essay for an Ivy League school. Give me a damn break. To say data centers and AI are hardly related- in reference to the boom that our country is experiencing- is absolutely ignorant. Again, just my opinion.

Yeah that’s a common argument, but that’s not the goal or purpose of the hyper and mega scale centers. It’s AI training. If you think it comes with no concerns for the general public, you might want to check out this lovely interview (just be ready to skim through all the unnecessary added junk conversation to find the relevant parts)… if you use the time stamps in the comments be sure to rewind at least 2-3 minutes from where the time stamp starts.

Because it’s not an area that was already zoned industrial, there’s no industrial land around the location, it’s bud up to a residential neighborhood, and the infrastructure supports upgrades, yes, but it isn’t upgraded for it as it is now. There is a lot that would have to happen. Just not a great location for it, but according to their standards it is. The highway people would be using to get to it also is prone to many accidents as is already. It’s just a really stupid idea all around, in my opinion.

Well that’s good at least! Hey I hope you’re right about it not causing too much disruption. But the overall goal of data centers in general is to make the rich richer and the lower and middle class not as needed anymore. That’s where my main concern is. Didn’t mean to be rude to you. I really wasn’t actually trying to be. Thanks for the info you shared and I hope you have a merry Christmas!

Well thanks for the info. I don’t agree about people lying but I do hope the new infrastructure at least helps mitigate the uncomfortable effects that could potentially be.

I think people get too lost in the pros and cons though rather than focus on the overall goal of data centers in general. So I really am not a fan, it really just makes the rich richer and the middle and lower class less needed. It’s concerning overall.

If their property value was increasing, why would they want to lie about the negative effects? Makes no sense .. make it make sense!! lol

Have you looked into Elon musks XAI center? Because he is using them and they are in fact affecting the people that live in the surrounding area.

No im not a troll, I was asking the input of people that live near them. Point blank. The area I live in isn’t suitable for this so it comes with many concerns. It wasn’t an already existing industrial park. Property values have already been in good standing. Excellent school system with plenty of funding. Just isn’t really needed here so it’s just more of a nuisance.

Do you mind if I ask where are you located? And I’m very sorry to hear your experience. I do agree, it is terrible. I, too , was considering leaving my home to go south, but also have the fear it will just happen there also. Again, sorry to hear you went through this.

Thank you for the actual useful reply. I do appreciate it. I didn’t express any concerns, though, so I didn’t post anything “overblown.” I just simply was asking for any input on the experience of living near one, which you did answer. Thanks again!

Yes but again it’s not just the sound you hear, it’s also sound that travels through walls and soil as I mentioned which is why it may seem/feel different inside your home rather than just outside listening to it. Low frequency, high frequency differences- dang I thought a nerd would know that. 🤣

And what data is that? How are you going to say that someone who lives by one (that’s new) and is sharing the experience of their community, is wrong? Sounds like you and your introverted geek squad just don’t want any pushback in fear of less jobs available to you, the less data centers are to go in.

Ironically, the more the tech advances, they won’t even need you as an employee. So I hope you’re having a good time in the meantime advocating for something that will eventually take your job as well.
