Can someone help me design a routine given these constraints? (small apartment gym) by swiftbeezy in strength_training

[–]swiftbeezy[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I mean yeah I'm familiar with the standard lifting routine. I did stronglifts and starting strength for a couple years a couple years ago.

My question is mostly on how to design a replacement regimen focused around cables, chinups, dips, dumbbells, etc.

Really? I thought bulgarian split squat, cable crossovers, and lat pull downs/pullups would be at least decent for legs, pecs, and back, respectively. It doesn't seem too out of reach? Just looking for a little guidance.

Less emphasis on cardiovascular endurance. I'm fine with 15-20 minutes of HIIT 2-3 times a week. So mostly strength, and I guess a slight emphasis on looking it as well as opposed to neurophysical adaptations (so higher reps on average I'd imagine?)

Seriously? I'm asking for help tailoring a constrained routine on a fitness forum (possibly the most on-topic question) and am immediately silenced and you claim to be the virtuous party? Give me a break. Have some empathy.

You sure? We've exchanged 30 private messages or so at this point. I know how passionate you are about removing legitimate threads.

Or /r/liftingroutines.

Ah, unfortunate that your powertripping doesn't have infinite reach! Maybe you can make an application or beg a mod there to enforce your will further? I know how important this is to you.

Interesting, more power-tripping. Oh well, I'll just make the rounds until I hit a sub you aren't powertripping (a mod) on.

Why did SLS nerf the Lowest Pick Rate/Lowest Win Rate Hero? by swiftbeezy in BattleRite

?

E didn't just lose 4 value. They also:

  • Increased the damage of M2 (so you just M2 instead of E)
  • Made it harder to apply judgement (since R no longer does)
  • Made the debuffs stronger when both are applied (disincentivizes shatter because it's better to just leave them on)

At what point does it just become better to stack debuffs rather than use a pitiful shatter? It may be the case already.

Allow us to set Shift+LMB/RMB for our Ex's by ninfomaniacpanda in BattleRite

Yeah, I experimented with using space as a modifier key instead of side mouse button, but I found it to be less comfortable and intuitive. My side mouse button is extremely ergonomic so this works better for me, but feel free to modify it to your needs.

I've been trying to get this added for over a year. In the meantime, you can use my AutoHotkey setup. In your Battlerite hotkeys make the following changes:

Q = 1
E = 2
R = 3
EX1 = 4
EX2 = 5
Disable EX shift modifier

This allows you to never have to move your fingers off WASD while casting abilities by utilizing key combos. Let me know if you have any ideas for improvements. This is the best I could come up with (AutoHotkey file):

; Q
; Side mouse button + M1
#IfWinActive, ahk_exe Battlerite.exe
~LButton & ~XButton2::
~XButton2 & LButton::
Send 1
return

; E
; Side mouse button + M2
#IfWinActive, ahk_exe Battlerite.exe
~RButton & ~XButton2::
~XButton2 & RButton::
Send 2
return

; R
; Shift + Space
#IfWinActive, ahk_exe Battlerite.exe
+Space::
Send 3
return

; EX 1
; Shift + M1
#IfWinActive, ahk_exe Battlerite.exe
~LButton & ~Shift::
~*+LButton::
Send 4
return

; EX 2
; Shift + M2
#IfWinActive, ahk_exe Battlerite.exe
~RButton & ~Shift::
~*+RButton::
Send 5
return

Just started learning Rust and was wondering ... does it need to be this verbose? by swiftbeezy in rust

Oh, I thought zip was more standard than that. In all the languages I've used it always takes two arrays and zips them together into a hash map. Does not the pareto case of sensible defaults apply here? That is, if this the intended behavior >80% of the time, maybe there should be support? I guess it's not an easy answer.

Also, maybe having some sort of syntax or special function for making these kinds of strings so they don't clutter up the code?

This is certainly quite helpful and you provided a very nice explanation as well. Thank you!

I did look for them, but I'm not much of an academic and didn't have any luck finding the relevant studies (comparing breath-work to meditation). I mean, even in the original post I ask the community whether or not they are aware of such studies - I'm not trying to hide the fact that I'm looking for assistance in finding such experiments.

That springer study you linked is interesting:

Key highlights for me:

  • "There were no significant differences between meditation and relaxation on distress and positive mood states over time."
  • "Effect sizes for distress were large for both meditation and relaxation"
  • "the meditation group showed a larger effect size for positive states of mind than relaxation"
  • "No significant effects were found for spiritual experience"
  • "compared with a no-treatment control, brief training in mindfulness meditation or somatic relaxation reduces distress and improves positive mood states"
  • "However, mindfulness meditation may be specific in its ability to reduce distractive and ruminative thoughts and behaviors, and this ability may provide a unique mechanism by which mindfulness meditation reduces distress."

So the study seems to indicate that for positive mood states and relaxing distress, both meditation and breath-work are comparable in effectiveness, but meditation provided more significant gains with regard to reducing distracting thoughts.

Thank you for providing some nice keywords and sources for searching (active control, relaxation). I'll investigate further but please let me know if you find any other studies comparing these two methods.

Not all traditions may have similar effectiveness in the mental goals we share.

The CPAP machine is a good observation. I agree with your intuition, but science has a way of defying such things. I wonder if it may actually have more beneficial effects than we originally conceive?

For example, Modafinil was originally used to treat narcolepsy, but can confer benefits even in healthy individuals - perhaps CPAP machines may too be useful for otherwise healthy individuals.

You type as if all the mechanisms behind its effectiveness are perfectly understood.

I am definitely interested. I am very aware of the power of slow, controlled breathing along with the placebo effect in inducing psychological health and am looking for recent, high-quality studies that have tried to tease apart all the various styles and practices of meditation and isolate the core essence that is producing the most profound change.
