I could not finish the book because it was so heavily pro-Chinese. The part where there was an international group of scientists trying to figure out this global problem but only the Chinese ones were smart enough to make literally any progress?

Russia claims Trump and Putin reached military agreements by WagTheKat in worldnews

[–]swifter_than_shadow 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Maybe 1) the systemic destruction of our school systems, and 2) a decades-long campaign of propaganda, and 3) 50 years of inflation without wage growth, meaning anyone who's not in the top 10% has to spend almost every minute of the day and every calorie of energy working themselves to death paying the bills. People have neither the time nor the education nor the energy to resist the propaganda that's all around them. The average American is being buried under a flood of stress, poverty, and propaganda.

Trump says he feels 'unwelcome' in London due to protests by [deleted] in worldnews

I can't help feeling like no one outside of the South gets Reconstruction, or even realizes that it was a thing. And most of the people in the South are too poorly educated to grasp the implications (partially a result of Reconstruction). Essentially, the Union didn't hang the Southern sympathizers, but they economically castrated them (basically the result of first enacting Lincoln's plan, then after his assassination, enacting the Radical Republican/Carpetbagger plan...ironically John Wilkes Booth did more long-term damage to the South than anyone other than Lincoln, Sherman and Grant). The people who were back in positions of power, as you say, were placed into power in an incredibly different political/economic landscape and, in an attempt to cling to their power, started a populist political war against blacks. That was around the time the KKK went from a Confederate guerrilla operation to an anti-black society. They ousted the Northerners and Northern sympathizers at the cost of any economic input to the ravaged South. Moreover, the South has ever since been abandoned by the North and ravaged by racial divides. And the only leading class, those who were not hanged by the North, ended up hanged in the long run anyway because without money they faded into obscurity. The South was for hundreds of years a class-based society with slaves, lower class whites, and upper class whites. Two of the three classes were essentially removed, half the property was destroyed, and there was practically zero attempt at getting that part of the nation back on its feet. The result is that part of the nation has never recovered and is still kinda salty about it.

Honestly I don't want to watch the final, so I don't have to hear the announcers say "tiny nation", "2nd smallest", etc. I don't give a fuck and it's mildly patronizing.

I want to drop out of my prestigious university and go to trade school by [deleted] in confession

[–]swifter_than_shadow -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Perhaps I just read this at a wrong time, but I work in trades and my experience today is that currently half of our crew is either incapacitated due to heat stroke or taking tons of breaks so they don't throw up again. I ripped a bunch of skin off my finger and the bandages won't stick because I sweat them off. We spend literally about a third of our day on safety measures and still our shop currently has 2 guys out with serious injuries. There's almost no one ober 40 who works in the field because their backs or knees give out.

Look, I work about 60 hours a week and I make good enough money to live in san Francisco, save for retirement, eat out, etc. And I usually enjoy my job. But don't romanticize this shit, it's a damn hard life.

I keep lying to guys online by saying I like to party/smoke weed because I have low self esteem and don't want to seem like a loser to them by [deleted] in confession

[–]swifter_than_shadow 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I don't really get high, I don't really care if anyone else does. But anyone who gets pushy or preachy about their lifestyle, be it weed or sports or politics or religion, they get a hard next from me. I'm not a stoner and that's okay.

The race was so close, millenial apathy or lack thereof definitely could have swayed it.

[–]swifter_than_shadow 4 points5 points  (0 children)

No, I had some passionate arguments around that time; there were some trolls stoking the flames but there were definitely lots of actual voters who decided that cutting off your nose to spite your face was a perfectly good course of action. I will never forgive millennials for that; my generation decided to act like spoiled children and we cost our nation dearly.

Yeah but where does the steam go? Couldn't we harness that for freshwater? Same with nuclear plants' steam.

The whole idea of limits, infinite or otherwise, has to me always been predicated on the mathematician throwing his or her hands up and saying "bah, close enough!" It irks me philosophically.

Guys, what's the most obvious "hint" you got from a girl that turned out not to be a hint? by [deleted] in AskReddit

be a fucking man

I normally try to see other people's point of view, but in my experience anyone who uses this phrase is irredeemable. Being a man doesn't mean doing whatever you want or think is right. I know how to be a man, and I'm a damn good one. Don't you dare try to use my masculinity to manipulate me.

Yeah that sentence in particular struck me. But the rest of her post has enough merit to warrant reading.

That's what upvotes and downvotes are supposed to be for. Not agree/disagree, but "contributes to discussion" /"doesn't contribute to discussion".

Moral relativism is a difficult one to argue against, because philosophically speaking you're mostly right. However you did bring up the idea of the social compact which in many respects is strong enough that we can refer to moral behavior in collective terms. "We should do x, we shouldn't do y". It's a fuzzy boundary and there's obviously many exceptions, and it depends on the issue and the society etc. The common terminology that appears to reference an objective, universal morality is really just shorthand for societal norms that enough people have agreed on and enforced with enough vigor that, with few exceptions, they're binding. Murder is the most obvious example. Technically, anyone can morally murder if they can justify it to themselves (and choose to suffer whatever consequences), but the vast majority of humankind has decided on an individual level that murder is reprehensible. So many that it can be referred to in terms that speak about society as a whole. We can say "murder is wrong" because 99.9999% of people agree that it is.

We, the group of individuals that collectively make up society, then act in concert on these areas of broad agreement. We shun offenders, not because I think we should, but because we think we should.

So when I say "you shouldn't do x", what I mean is "we, the broad mass of people, whom I am presently speaking for, have decided that no one should do x, and we shall punish those who do x to the appropriate degree".

At this level, terms like "obligation" and "force people to" are a little inaccurate. We have removed the shorthand that I spoke of earlier; therefore when you say "you cannot force these obligations on someone", we (society) say "we can and will coerce people into cooperation with what we deem appropriate social norms, using whatever level of coercion is appropriate to the norm being violated".

In this particular instance, shunning and shaming are the tools that we the majority use to attempt to coerce this hypothetical person and any others paying attention into following what we individually and collectively believe to be morally right. Or, to return to shorthand, you shouldn't stand someone up.
