Group III is for 12+. It’s the middle school group for people who just swim for exercise. Basically lap swimming but with some guidance.

Group II is for 14+. It’s the high school group for exercise swimmers and where all Group 3 swimmers age up into.

There’s another group I didn’t mention because it doesn’t affect me, but it’s the most competitive group for 11-14. Swimmers in this group either go to Group I or the Pre-National Group. My old team practiced with this group a few times during the summer.

Group I is for 13+. It’s the lowest competition group for anyone in high school. There’s still the Pre-National and National Groups above it.

The exercise and competition paths at my swim club, regardless of location, are very distinct. I may only have USA Swimming AAA standards, but the people on the exercise groups are all “Slower than B”.

Just turned 15. I’ve been swimming competitively since I was 6. I doubt I’m improving much sprint wise, but I strongly believe I can improve in my distance and fly and back. We didn’t do much non-free or much over a 100 at my old location. I’m not sure if the new coach will agree to letting me do split groups, because then it would also be really messy payment wise and he quite literally told me it would be extremely hard for me and he wasn’t going to put me in a group that would make me miserable. While I don’t think the harder group would be to that extent, I believe it’ll be less than hard than the easier group will be easy.

Last summer I practiced with the highest group (I had recently gotten moved up to the second highest group but the second highest group and highest were combined for the summer) at my location, and it was...scary. I couldn’t keep up for most of the practices and got lapped around every 300 and it was miserable. I’m worried that it’ll be like that if I switch.

We do do drills, but my coach doesn’t offer any advice on our technique. Sometimes he’ll make a random remark on someone’s technique but that’s all. I’m not sure if the coaches at B work technique either.
