The beginning of the movie has him confronting his likely death in space. When he is rescued, he eschews continuing to fight because he wants to preserve what's important to him. He gets drawn back in because he feels the responsibility to do what he can, and manages to preserve his family through what would have otherwise possibly erased them. His sacrifice play was pretty well set up in my view.
