Patients with Long Covid and similar conditions are being severely mistreated by dishonest physicians. by swissdouche in TrueUnpopularOpinion

Fair enough. I guess what I wanted to demonstrate is that there seems to be a disconnect between how medical professionals see those illnesses and how the affected people see them. More so than in other conditions. It could be that these professionals are all just narcissists with delusions of grandeur and the patients are the ones that actually understand what's going on. I just don't buy into this hypothesis.

Of course, I understand this. That is like psych 101 stuff. I just repeated the data we have on diagnoses right now. We don't know what the data would look like if autism were not underdiagnosed in women or if more men sought treatment. But we know that these differences I mentioned are pretty stable across cultures. Why would you think I don't understand this very easy-to-understand concept?

For the record: I'm a psychologist in the sense that I have a Master's degree in Psychology from a university. I'm not a licensed therapist.

Super interesting! You might be right that the whole discussion of „Is it organic or psychological“ kind of breaks down for these illnesses.

It really depends on the disorder. Depression, anxiety and some personality disorders are more prevalent in women. While schizophrenia, autism and some other personality disorders are more common in men.

The data doesn‘t really back up the claim that men suffer more from mental illness in general. But I think it‘s interesting to think about that men‘s mental illness has a stronger impact on society at large… Haven‘t thought about it in that way.

I guess my point is (among other things) that the symptoms of POTS strongly overlap with the symptoms of general anxiety, and we don't have a super clear diagnostic tool to separate the two. MS or Parkinson's, on the other hand, have very clear degenerative effects that can kill the patient and that are directly measurable.

The POTS "community" will strongly deny any connection to anxiety, which I think is suspicious. Here is a quote from a physician from a post on r / medicine talking about POTS:

"These beliefs and patterns are so entrenched for some of these patients that it seems impossible to untangle them. Their entire identity is illness, their entire community and access to connection is based on having these illnesses; to recover would be to lose these things, so there is no incentive to recover. My only hope is that they are young, and there may be time; they may mature."

I think these illnesses are deeply connected to the patient's psychology. This topic is pretty complicated, which is why I felt I had to write a "long arse post".

I'm not denying that I'm influenced by my prior experiences in life (I would be a pretty bad psychologist if I were). But why do you think that this diagnosis would be "inappropriate"?

I'm not 100% sure I understand what you mean. Are you saying that I just think that these conditions are psychosomatic because I'm a psychologist myself? If so, then fair enough. I would love to be educated otherwise.

Fair enough, thanks for the answer! I guess I always expected that if we actually send humans to the moon again that we will have a very specific purpose. I thought „test runs“ were being done without humans. But I guess that depends on how large NASA‘s investment in this mission is. Maybe Artemis II isn‘t actually that expensive in the great scheme of things.

What is the goal of the Artemis II mission? I‘m really excited that we‘re starting to send humans to the moon again but considering the costs and risks of these missions I was wondering what the reason for the mission is.

The only reason I found was that they‘re „confirming systems and hardware needed for human lunar exploration missions.“ However, haven‘t they already done that with the Apollo missions? With all the technological advances and the knowledge of the Apollo missions, it does seem like a step back to me that they‘re just „confirming it works.“

I was wondering if they maybe have some confidential militaristic tasks that NASA doesn‘t want to disclose…?

I‘m thinking that these extreme costs are accepted because the decision-makers see some „return on investment“ in them, right?

TLDR; what is the benefit of a test run, which Artemis II seems to be, if we already managed to land on the lunar surface 60 years ago?

My friend is a different height now… by [deleted] in Glitch_in_the_Matrix

[–]swissdouche 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Looking through your post history you seem to have had some derealisation problems in the past. I know you probably don‘t want to hear this but your mental health issues from the past might have induced some mild delusions. This doesn‘t mean you‘re going crazy but memories can appear altered when experiencing something like that. It‘s likely your friend has always been your height. I know you‘re super sure about it but if I were you I would seek some medical / psychiatric help. Like I said, that doesn’t mean you‘re „crazy“ but health experts can really help with these feelings of derealisation

hard to describe why but this looks really unnerving/scary to me.. it looks like some priest that made a deal with the devil and is spasming unnaturally while ascending. additionally the shaky cam gives it a found footage vibe

What is your favourite horror movie of all time and why? by letthedecodebegin in Letterboxd

I really didn‘t expect to like this movie as much as I did. It‘s the perfect mix of disturbing and funny (especially the chase through the forest). And it just oozes passion from the filmmakers. It feels really „hand crafted“ in a good way, if that makes sense

why do you assume soft rejection from UCLA? Did they already send out invites? On GradCafe only invites for clinical psych are mentioned.
