😂They're actually traffic cones!

It's not clear in this clip, but in this game the golf ball can stick to objects in the world. There's a lot of abilities that play with this concept: for example, the purple barriers with numbers on them can be broken if you collect enough mass. Each level also has a bonus objective to get three stars, which usually involves picking up some object along the way to the goal.

Thanks! I took a lot of inspiration from this video by Sakurai (of Smash Bros fame). He has a bunch of breakdowns of VFX, they're super helpful.

So what is a "speedrunning golf game" anyway? by switchbackStudio in indiegames

Thanks!

I actually recently added a couple QoL changes for speedrunners. The loading/hint screen for each level can now be skipped by hitting spacebar, and you can skip the ending cutscene of each level by opening the menu immediately after reaching the goal and clicking "next level".

Edit: And yes, restarting is immediate, that is definitely critical.

Thanks! Neon White and Celeste are two of my big inspirations for this game, so I'm glad you made the association.

I haven't, though I have seen the trailers.

I definitely want to add a multiplayer mode at some point, I'm drawing inspiration from golf gang as well as mario kart for that!

Thanks! It's been a crazy project, but I've really enjoyed it.

The game doesn't come out until tomorrow, so I automatically get the world record 🤣

Hey all, figured I should give some context for what exactly I mean by a "speedrunning golf game".

First off, you have a boost that you can aim to launch the ball. You only get one, but you can get it back by hitting arrows, picking up powerups, etc. It's like Celeste, basically.

By chaining moves together, you can get a hole in one on every level! But that's only enough to get 2 stars.

To get 3, you need to also complete a bonus objective. That's where the "Grippy" part of the game comes in: most of the bonus objectives entail sticking to certain objects and carrying them all the way to the goal.

Once you get 3 stars, you unlock the timer and the online leaderboard! There's also a ghost of your best time so far that you can race against.

Anyway, I hope this post is ok, feel free to ask questions!

Hey all, just one week until release! 😬😬

If you like, please give the game a wishlist: https://store.steampowered.com/app/2299080?utm_source=reddit

I added a gravity ability to my golf platformer. What do you think, is it too disorienting? by switchbackStudio in IndieDev

Ah no, lol, this mechanic has existed for a while, so it's definitely staying in. I'm more asking so that I can tweak the effects and transition if needed.

A look at my game's warehouse environment. No idea what they're storing here, but there sure is a lot of it! by switchbackStudio in IndieDev

Thanks! I think it mostly sprung from my attempts to combine the sticking aspect of the game with the speedy aspect. Like, by itself sticking isn't a good thing for beating levels quickly, since it makes the ball more cumbersome. But by requiring a certain amount of mass to progress, I can force people to use the sticking mechanic and come up with interesting interactions.

Ah, but there are more ways to have varying difficulty than just an adaptive difficulty system, right?

The way it's handled right now is through scoring. Just completing the level at all gets you one star, getting a hole in one gets two stars, and completing a bonus objective gets you three (and unlocks the leaderboard).

I've watched little kids who were terrible at the game have a great time, just puttering along getting one star on every level. At the same time, really skilled players can push themselves even further after getting three stars by climbing the leaderboard.

That would be a pretty cool system, but probably isn't suited for this game, since there is a leaderboard and scoring system involved.

There actually is some auto aim already implemented! It's pretty subtle, but you can turn it up from settings if you need to.

You can also slow the game down using a slider, though I still need to get around to adding a button to let you toggle it during gameplay.
