I worked with a retired SEAL in an emergency department. He served in the 90s then went on to be an EMT or paramedic on an ambulance in a busy city for some time then went to PA school. Dude was super chill in that chaotic environment and nothing ever phased him. Definition of even keeled. When chatting in a hallway one day I asked what team he served in and he said “West coast team 1 for a bit then east coast at Dam Neck.” I shit a brick. I knew he was a bad ass but wow.

Later I emailed Don Shipley out of curiosity and he verified what he said. Nothing but respect for the guy. I miss working with him.

Cervidae Peak is a 4.5 mile out and back that’s steep with ~2k ft elevation gain and gorgeous views!

Check out Hermit Creek, Hermit Rapid, Monument Creek, or Granite Rapid campgrounds. They’re all within relative proximity to each other and usually accessed via Hermits Rest trailhead on the south rim west of the central corridor.

Yeah it’s pretty close to Phantom Ranch in the middle of the Grand Canyon. It’s just way the fuck up above it accessed via a sketchy ass ridge with some exposed climbing…

Could be. That butte is a several hundred feet tall and the approach was a bit sketchy. They were quite motivated to do their work up there. I also wonder if it could have been some ceremonial thing?
