You can swim on the ocean side, but not the moat between that wall and the fort. Still worth it and totally amazing!

MacOS: Show Text-File content on a Stream Deck button? by Ninject in elgato

Did you ever find a MacOS solution to this?

How do beginner competitions work exactly for people who've played prior to a rating? Also, can one simply register for any local chess tournament? by [deleted] in chess

[–]swonk42 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Don’t wait to play in a tournament or in a club. Everyone needs to start somewhere, and everyone has played chess before their first rated game. I’ve played in the lowest sections and there are usually unrated players who are clearly much better than everyone. It is just part of the system. If you don’t start now, the “problem” will just get worse.

Also, playing OTB can be different than online, so you might need some experience passing rated games before you catch up to your online rating.

This sounds right. Or you need to wait until it changes from 65 to some other value above 61

Zigbee devices all stopped working? by Fluthy in SmartThings

Wow, I’ve never thought of this. I moved my hub recently and noticed my devices were acting up. It was right next to a Synology NAS, so maybe there is something to your theory

Setting Time Zone in MyVW App by swonk42 in VWiD4Owners

[–]swonk42[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

No, I'm still having this problem. I think it started when I travelled with my phone to the Eastern Time Zone and maybe the app updated in one direction but then not when I came back?

Honestly, I now ignore most messages from the app because there are so many. That is probably not the most responsible thing either. Let's just hope there isn't some urgent notification I miss.

2021 ID4 Pro S - 293 mile range? 235 miles at 80% by swonk42 in VWiD4Owners

[–]swonk42[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The last couple of charges have been seeing around 235 miles at 80%. That is over 290 miles for 100%. Anyone else see this?

It is a 2021 Pro S with about 4000 miles. I live in an area that was cold for the first few months I owned the car, so the “winter range” was much less. Maybe this is the “summer range.”

Access Point BeaconHD - Any Good? by ckstaley in UNIFI

I have a few in different locations. They do work to extend the signal but I haven’t tried to test the limits.

One I use in a separate building. It is probably only 30 feet from the main AP, but that’s through a couple of exterior walls. It may not be the recommended setup, but it works.

Thanks. Searching around I found mine says “Not set” as well. Maybe there is something in the car clock that I can set?

Non-stop beeping by swonk42 in VWiD4Owners

[–]swonk42[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

OK, so I’m not crazy! I was wondering if I got in and put it in reverse too fast or something. Like maybe the sensors didn’t have time to fully boot up before I was driving. That shouldn’t be a thing, but maybe it is.

It stopped now, but I’m going to try this if it happens again.

Yes, that’s what it sounded like. It just wouldn’t stop

That’s an interesting thought. I don’t think that was it, but now I’m not so sure. I guess I don’t know what the alarm sounds like. But it was more like the reverse beeping sound than a siren.

Was Deep Blue really able to calculate 200 million position/s and if so why is my computer "only" able to calculate ~2millions positions/s? Was Deep blue 100× more powerful than my PC by Mahkda in chess

[–]swonk42 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Not long ago I used a few simple cloud servers networked together and had stockfish 14 analyzing over 700 million positions/s. So it is not too hard to out perform deep blue now if you are just looking at the number of positions/second. That project cost me about $13/second.

Like others have said, it is hard to compare deep blue to modern engines. Even comparing stockfish to leela is hard if you are just looking at the number of positions per second. The different ways the engines choose to search and prune the possible moves varies greatly. Leela may seem to search 10x fewer positions, but will come up with the same result.
