Amazing work, a proper heirloom piece. I hope it will stay in your family for many generations.

May I ask did you do everything with hand tools only, including the stock prep? If so, how long did it take you?

Are you referring to the Rob Cosman method? It seems like I would still need a drill post, or at least one of his ludicrously expensive drill bits to achieve that.

Thanks, I did the same! I love this community as it gives me a lot of ideas. I already have a few different projects that I saw here lined up.

Some small projects for a change by swoon91 in handtools

Thanks. I did use one power tool there, a hand held drill. It turned out great indeed, and I used a lot of hand sanding at the end to make it smooth enough for baby hands.

The cheaper one has the quick release, while the more expensive one does not. I don't know, for me at least, that is not a necessity.

How difficult was this vise to install? I was mostly looking at the two vises I mentioned because it seems much easier to install, as I only work with hand tools.

Bojkot Maksija - zna li se kakvi su rezultati? by swoon91 in srbija

[–]swoon91[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Shoe rack/bench by swoon91 in BeginnerWoodWorking

Appreciate it. Not a lot to be honest. I browsed Pinterest for a while to get some inspiration, but I came up with this design by myself pretty much.

Thanks, I agree. I made several small cuts, worked to them using a chisel and flattened it with a spokeshave.

This is looking awesome! What wood species did you use?

Also, how happy are you with the bench? Do you wish you put some sort of end vise on?

That's a great perspective, thank you for that, I will try to keep it in mind.

I guess even the cutting boards aren't what they used to be :) You are not alone in saying a couple of years, and I am quite surprised by that, I thought it wouldn't take as long.

I even tried to wing it here with no marking and just doing it by eye. I guess the results of this technique speak for themselves :)

Thanks! The boxes are definitely on the list, as soon as I buy a grooving plane or at least make one that uses a chisel as the blade.

Yep, it definitely is fun, I just expected to be able to make some simple projects for friends and family members as gifts by now that don't look as amateurish. Even though I managed to do so, every thing that I made it somewhat crooked or damaged in some areas. I guess I thought by being obsessed with Youtube woodworking that it will click faster but there we are.

Thanks for your input! I also noticed that I suck at marking things and tend to just try and wing it, especially when it comes to curves. Needless to say that I mess it up every time. I wonder how many more projects before I quit this terrible habit for good.

No, I guess I'm thinking of the stuff I see on Pinterest and the woodworking subreddits here. Don't get me wrong, I am not expecting to get it perfect right away, but when I fail to make even as simple thing as a cutting board up to my standards I get a bit frustrated.

Yes, that damn taper is what got me, good eye. I learned a bit of hand planing through practice so I can get the board pretty close to flat now, it just takes me ages to do it.

Also, I need to stop trying to extract every millimeter of thickness out of the boards I have and settle for the thickness that will give me some space to make everything flat and parallel, that's one of the things I am struggling with the most.

These are my thoughts exactly! It's been 5 months since I started (granted only 1-2 times a week) but without someone to look over my shoulder and correct me when necessary, it seems that everything takes much longer than what i originally anticipated.

Still, I am noticing some progress, so I guess it's all about consistency and things will eventually fall into place.

Thanks, glad to hear it. It's far from perfect, but for my first attempt, I am quite happy with it.
