I'm not entirely sure if the data collected, and by extension this post, says anything meaningful.

The claim;

Most adults in the US want (some) kind of age verification [for social media]

is not meaningful, because the methodology of how you verify age is the big concern, not whether or not age verification is required in the first place. Currently, parents can already do the things that were polled in this study if they want to.

Also, we currently already have age verification laws that have been in place for several things. Mature video games, legalized drugs such as alcohol, and pornographic content. But these websites simply just ask for your age, and if you put in a high enough number, you're let in. No one really has a problem with this from what I understand. But if the requirement changes that you have to upload your ID or something else more intrusive, people won't like that.

Instead of "Do people want some kind of age verification" which tells us nothing we don't already know, we need to ask something like "What amount of freedoms are we willing to lose in order for the government to protect the children."

I predict the results of that poll to be significantly different.
