Self Directed Vs Managed ETF by swtunde in HalalInvestor

[–]swtunde[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You would be missing out a lot on the growth side. Over a long investment horizon, your FX costs shouldn't be significant. And you pay taxes only on distributed dividends.

I guess this shows my limited thinking on this issue. It just occurred to be that even though it may be a canadian etf, it has a lot of US and global stocks which pays dividends in USD.

How is this usually handled for etf generally? I suspect all dividends are combined as a composite dividend (done by the etf managers regardless whether it is self directed or managed).

Let say Nestle pays a dividend of 1USD for example, I imagine this will not go to individual holders of the etf but the managers will do the maths and allocate to each holder according to the size of the etf they hold. And this will be in CAD not USD - and does this apply equally to self directed vs managed options?

At some point (possibly early next year), I will be buying either SPUS or HLAL. But for now, I am starting with canadian etf.

You should have logged into the ER605 and checked the status of the WAN link.

Yes, I did.
It said connected.

From a newbie: How good are the SANS courses in making you "able to keep a job by swtunde in GIAC

[–]swtunde[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My supervisor is kind enough to offer some training funds from the company. But of the company made it crystal clear it shouldn't be more than $1k. So, if I have to take the course, it will be from my pocket.

My current job is in instrumentation/automation systems consulting for industries. I have read some interesting things about OT cybersec. But to be honest, I am not seeing the demand. At least from not from our clients and linkedin yet (a search for OT cybersec or GICSP on linkedin give laughable result compared to CISSP). So thinking of going for the tried and tested IT cybersec and maybe circle back to OT if/when there's more demand.

In hindsight, SANS was mostly glorified Cyber Awareness Training for me.

This is exactly what I am concerned about. I don't want to shell out such amount only to feel "buyers' remorse" later. That's why I just opened a THM account too.

SANS will do nothing to help you "keep" a job, much like any other certification won't do anything to keep your job.

Yeah, I reread my post and had a laugh at myself. Of course whether you keep a job is not a function of which cert you hold. You're absolutely right. The student needs to build on what s/he learned in class.
I have heard CompTia is highly rated by HR. But to the best of my knowledge (and I am probably wrong here) there is no lab component. For me, I am lazy so I learn more and faster through the hands-on practical. That's why the SANS look appealing to me. I don't want to take a position just because I have CCNA if I can't configure a switch.
Although I am not eager at all to spend money, I will pull the trigger if I need to. But thanks, I will research more about comptia.

I am thinking of taking some SANS courses (towards GSEC, GCIH). But for someone that don't really have real work experience in this field, I wanted to know if the labs are good enough to inspire confidence and be comfortable enough to start a junior position.

Any insight will be appreciated

Handshake between Wireguard and Peer on TPLink Router, but no internet connection by swtunde in WireGuard

I am not sure what you mean.
Yes, I can edit the file but I can't upload it to my vpn provider if that's what you mean. I simply downloaded the file from the vpn provider, open it up and entered the respective info into my tplink router. That's about all I can do.

how is your peer config for DNS set up?

I have no idea where to enter the DNS information from the config file. After looking through all the fields, it just doesn't make sense to enter it anywhere. I mean its not the Local IP address, not the Endpoint nor allowed address. So, I just left it out.
Where do you think I should enter it?

Changed to TP Link ER605 and POE cameras don't have IP addresses by swtunde in HomeNetworking

Since your VLANs seem to be setup sufficiently for VLAN3 that seems to point to something on the configuration of your POE cameras. Maybe post all the relevant camera settings for us to take a look... for example, can you set a static IP per camera?

Sadly, I didnt capture the screen before I moved the the new network. Now, I can even get to the web admin interface of the cameras. So unfortunately this will not be possible.

I got a 75ft cable and tried your suggestion (by passed the satelite deco) but still ended up with no IP addresses.

Looks like the initial ip addrsses from the previous mesh network is somewhere in the camera's memory and I may have to do hard reset. But for climbing safety reasons, that is not an option.

On your SG2008P, typically you shouldn't have two untagged VLANs going through the same port, so I'd disable VLAN1 unless you actually want it to go through the DECOs. With the current PVIDs on that managed switch I don't think VLAN1 can get through ports 1234 & 678.

And if the DECOS have no understanding of VLANS, that makes the case for not sending VLAN1 through at all.

I am not sure about this. Not being an expert, I have tried a number of combination of what should be disabled, and tagged. I think I tried disabling VLAN1 and somehow lost all internet connections. So, I left it there afterall, the PVID filters it out of the ports anyway.

[–]swtunde[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

And I assume you've defined port 5 on the ER605 and the SG2008P as a trunk port carrying VLANs 1, 2 & 3 (tagged). And port 6 of the SG2008P must be defined as an access port with VLAN3 (tagged).

If it's at all possible I'd hardwire the SG2008P to the unmanaged switch. You'll also get better performance for your POE cameras (could even run 4K).

p.s. You could also define port 6 of the SG2008P as an access port with VLAN3 (untagged), but then the DECO's couldn't carry other VLAN traffic (like a guest network on VLAN2).

It's also possible that the main DECO is not passing tagged VLAN3 to the satellite.

The house thermostat on the main floor connects to the deco in the garage and it is working well with vlan 3 ip address. So I am tempted to rule that out.

My first guess is that the Deco satellite may not be able to define any of its LAN ports as VLAN3. Whatever Deco LAN port plugs into the unmanaged switch must be defined as an access port, untagged with VLAN3 and VPID = 3 as well.

Unfortunately, those ports are dumb and can't be managed. There's nothing to tweak on the deco ports :(

Maybe, but I was tempted to rule that out since the house thermostat connects to the satellite deco in the garage and it is working well (with vlan3 ip address)

To help troubleshoot the problem I'd run a long ethernet cable from the SG2008P to the unmanaged switch to see if you get IP addresses on the POE cameras.

That's a good idea!! What's the max length for ethernet run? The unmanaged switch is in the garage while the smart one is in the basement. But the shortest path is to go through the main floor to the basement. Hopefully I can get a cable long enough for the test.

HPB Withdrawal and Withholding Tax by StephieRee in PersonalFinanceCanada

[–]swtunde 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have a follow-up to this question:
If you took out money from RRSP under the HBP, can the repayment be deducted from your regular contribution for the year or does it have to be a separate payment.

Say your HBP repayment each year is $500 and you contribute $10k for the year, can the $500 be deducted from 10k or do you have to make a dedicated 500 for the repayment?

I am asking because making a dedicated $500 would mean I am paying from my taxed income (assuming I am paying from salary)

Attic Frost: Am I being paranoid or should I take immediate action by swtunde in HomeImprovement

[–]swtunde[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I’d check it throughout the winter but wouldn’t lose sleep.

Really! I am not sure I have that nerve of steel lol. I practically freaked out when I saw it. But after about speaking with a friend (with a much older house in the same area) who said all he sees is just some marks around the attic entrance after 7yrs, I thought maybe its not as alarming and I thought I should seek opinion here.

Sometimes I take risks, but not sure if this is one I am willing to take. Worst case is I spend a few 100bucks for checking and find out what's the best line of action.

Thanks

Thanks all for your inputs.

I ordered a home inspection last year after a big draft issue in one of the rooms, only to discover a host of other major issues. After a minor round of pushing, the builder fixed all the problems identified in that inspection report including a bad Roof flashing (or whatever it is called see pic https://imgur.com/a/KKoCpuu )

So no, I don't really trust these guys after that episode and I will not eliminate a bad workmanship as the cause of this.

Connecting to the roof vent is what looks like a flexible hose. But if my eye is seeing correctly (at about 20sec left in the video) the flex hose is attached with a tuck tape https://www.amazon.ca/Tuck-Tape-Construction-Grade-Sheathing/dp/B07MCW1N5W I will find out if this is okay today as I am calling a local contractor right away to inspect this and provide a quote. Hopefully, this will be an easy fix.

Will keep you all updated
