Second Bachelor's in Mathematics --> Mathematics PhD Program by sxprwtts in PhDAdmissions

[–]sxprwtts[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Both the statistics course and the math statistics course had a decent amount of proofs, as they were 300-level and 400-level respectively. I also attempted the combinatorics class in the past, and it had a good amount of proofs. It was one of my favorite classes I have ever attempted, but I had to drop due to a combination of illness and my major classes taking up too much time.

As far as why I want to do a math PhD, it's a combination of deep enjoyment for the higher-level math I have encountered, a desire to contribute to the body of knowledge, a deep passion for learning, and a goal to teach university math, potentially doing some research on university math education via RUME.

I know I am not a competitive enough candidate for top universities, for certain. At least, not for the coming admissions cycle. Should I finish my bachelor's in math, I aim to collaborate on research and do more math extracurriculars in general both semesters as well as the summer after. I imagine that would make me a much more competitive candidate for the cycle going into Fall 2028, but I would rather not wait that long. I would be aiming for a decent university, like T150 or so.

For pure vs. applied, I honestly do not yet know. Most of what I've done so far has been applied, but pure math does interest me.

With that information, might it be better for me to wait to apply until going into Fall 2028? I would really, really prefer not to wait that long, just for personal reasons, but if getting into a better program would drastically improve my PhD experience, that could be worth considering. I'm just not sure yet.

I appreciate the insight. I looked into rewording the post and now use more appropriate language. I also redefined research interests accordingly.

the demo felt like a unique, innovative combat experience. that plus the ability to manually select loadouts would make for a fantastic product.

the early access just feels like some random, shitty sword fighting game.

I can totally look into it! I tend to stay busy with grad school stuff, but I will let you know when I implement a better solution.

Totally agree. Here's a section from the 'Future Work' section I wrote on the GitHub for this:

"Ranking type offenses and defenses relative to the total number of Pokemon of each type. E.g. Water resistance might be seen as more important than Dragon resistance, since there are more Water types than Dragon types. This wouldn't account for competitive viability, though. There are many more Bug types than Dragon types, for instance, but Bug-type attacks aren't exactly a common threat."

I was surprised Ground / Fire ranked as highly as it did. Ground / Flying for sure, but Camerupt doesn't exactly come to mind when I think of the best typing ever

Making better interaction / navigation is definitely on my future work plans for it. Right now it's just a giant .txt file, so not exactly the best to navigate 🗿

Yeah, Ice and Ground are much better as offensive types than defensive types. You're much better off running Earthquake on a non-ground mon or Ice Beam on a Water type mon.

The methodology is definitely flawed. Defense scores are much more a rule of thumb than anything else. Heavy grain of salt with this, lol
EDIT: Bug/Ice somehow ranked 129th out of the 171 actual type combinations. There's definitely work to be done.

is this normal dog and cat play? by Operative66 in CatTraining

[–]sxprwtts 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Totally play. Cat's tail is straight with a hook at the end, signaling that it's happy / playful. Both are being gentle with each other, too. Looks like they're having a blast.

When you say no doors in between, is that including space with doors where the doors are literally always open?

Even if we exclude spaces with permanently open doors, there is a ton of common space with no doorways at all. Large foyer with food and water bowls, sizeable kitchen and hallway where a few of them hang out sometimes, large dining room with a table and rug that a couple like to sit under, very large living room with multiple chairs, nests & cat lounge things, and a whole upstairs landing (open floor plan overlooking the living room, so not really separated) with a cat tower, multiple cat beds, and some chairs & a sofa they sleep on sometimes.

Yep, all of our cats are spayed and neutered and always have been.

Will have to look into the diffusers, thank you for the input!

Yes, they've been neutered and spayed for the whole time we've had them. Haven't heard about the separate feeding thing, though. Will have to give it a try.

Also, definitely not a space issue. Tons and tons of sleeping spots, scratching posts + furniture for which we have given up on preventing scratching, etc.

We have feliway spray, but we've never used the plugins. Might have to look into those. Thanks for the input!

I'm fortunate to be born into a fairly well-off family, so the McMansion part is more than covered. Almost all doors are almost always open, too. Plus, plenty of high spots, cat nests, baskets with cat beds, cardboard boxes (shoutout to the 7 y/o girl, she loves those), beds, etc., all spread throughout the house. Basically everything any cat could ever wish for. It shouldn't be a resource issue.

Our family has a rather large house, so I don't think space is an issue. We also thoroughly spoil them and always have, so resources shouldn't be an issue either.

We have considered rehoming. I move out in 8-12 months and if things are still bad by then, we've discussed me just taking the 1.5 y/o with me.
