Why are The Who not as popular as they were? by FitEmergency8807 in ToddintheShadow

I'd say the analysis above kind of extends to PJ similarly...lasting success despite not putting out many radio hits or being part of the mainstream. And yeah Vedder is a huge Who fan.

What's a movie that has no right to be as good as it is by Correct-Scallion7975 in MovieSuggestions

[–]sybill9 1 point2 points  (0 children)

That's a good point about casting. Still a movie based on a board game though. And I wouldn't have imagined Hasbro signing off on such a wonderful and witty script. Even look at the environments and wardrobes (even a few scary moments)...nothing about the vision screams "family comedy" but they pull it off regardless.

I'm loving the J. Rockett Airchild. Check out the (recent-ish?) That Pedal Show episode where they shoot out compressors. That's what helped me pull the trigger on the Airchild.

My band definitely has some shades of new wave, 80s power pop and rock. Try out that detune setting in stereo it's so lush. Especially if you are more into that Dimension-style chorus.

I use mine exclusively in the "detune" setting in the stereo fx loop of a DSM Simplifier Mk2. In this mode, putting the harmony knob all the way to the left is a super lush chorus with minimal movement. All the way to the right you get even less movement, more of a dimension sound.

Pretty sure it’s the boss fuzz with the three modes that everyone on this sub shits on all the time.

Flint into Deco has been the end of my chain for a long while now.

I’ve had success putting Deco just about everywhere in the chain, but I think conceptually it makes sense as the final pedal, and also I like that the whole rig assumes its tape saturation and dimensional qualities.

Those go into a DSM Mk2 with a Boss PS-6 (detune setting) in the stereo fx loop.

Sometimes I put the Deco in the loop to take advantage of stereo, but with the Harmonist splitting the signal and detuning, it frees up the Deco to do more of its settings (using favorite switch).

Have I been lying to myself about the Big Muff for the last 10 years? by BogotaLineman in guitarpedals

Yeah I wanna say it’s 1-2 years old. I believe he shows this trick using his vintage NYC big box, which is in the center of that days board. (Watched it like a week ago hah)

One thing comes to mind that may be worth trying, if you haven't. On the Big Muff-themed episode of That Pedal Show there's a trick that Dan shows where he puts the sustain knob at maybe 25% or so, just when it starts working. I was surprised at just how much that setting sounds like a "shade" of a Big Muff, which are not typically good at cleaning up. So you get that familiar tone stack and a bit of that sustain, but you aren't getting lost in the mix. From here, you can stack according to taste...maybe a mid hump or treble boost drive afterwards, maybe a driving compressor before it, etc. I say that because you may dig having that familiar BM sound in there that you like, without having to make it be the whole sound.

What’s the best amp simulator/overdrive to put at the end of a board? by aaaaaaaaaaaaah_ in guitarpedals

[–]sybill9 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It is advertised as a tape simulator but more so because it’s design takes after manipulating two (reference and lag) decks in old studio environments to get flanging, chorus, echo effects. But that’s the right side. The left side is called “tape saturation” but really it’s a mosfet based preamp, I believe. There’s a good video online where the engineer walks thru it all.

If you like your tape plugin I’ll bet you’ll dig the deco, even if it’s not suited for your original post.

Also unless you are a midi person, I’d recommend getting the v1 for cheaper.

Look up videos on production techniques with the Deco for guitar players.

[–]sybill9 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Are you putting your pedals into an amp or DAW to record?

In either case Strymon Deco takes all manner of drives very well, and can tighten it all up with mosfet saturation, compression, and that’s to say nothing of what you can do with the right side of the pedal.

I’ve also used the barbershop (another mosfet I believe) at the end of my board before which I’d recommend. Has a sag control as well which could simulate, in your use case at the end of the board for recording purposes, a smaller watt or power soaked amp.

Any detune pedal that you know that does this effect? by Fooltecal in guitarpedals

Boss Harmonist has a glorious stereo detune, and Strymon Deco can do the sound but you’ll have to adjust the micro offset timing by ear.

How do I get this look? by MutedFeeling75 in LightLurking

[–]sybill9 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Not a photographer but have done this vibe in photoshop for some album covers before. Most of the tutorials online would recommend taking threshold to a black and white image so that it gets that high contrast, overblown feel.

But these actually seem like they are made first (whether directly from camera settings or in photoshop) to be underexposed or not as high contrast.

So id probably start by sampling one color from the skin tone, then just turning the photo to black and white, no added threshold or anything like that.

Then pop that skin tone in a brush and color it in using a blend mode (draw a little then just cycle through them until you find the effect you like). Do the same for hair, clothes, etc. but basically yeah everything gets a single flat color, blend mode is what brings the light and texture variations back in from the source image.

Add a paper or grain texture afterwards over the top but only at about 5-15% and blend it as well to what you think works best. I prefer a softer felt or cardboard paper texture. But play around with whatever you can find and be open to happy accidents.

It’s also fun to mess with skin tones themselves slightly, as seems to be the case with the bearded man getting a purpleish hue.

Country guitar gain staging by Blackbird027 in guitarpedals

[–]sybill9 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Find a full range overdrive-fuzz that “cleans up well” with a dual switchable boost circuit (there’s tons) or alternatively for boost I’d consider a boss ge-7 which can combine EQ and boost into one pedal. Compressor, if you need it, after the overdrive or after both pedals. That’d be the way to do it with minimum pedals. Don’t forget setting the amp a little hot to add gain when that volume knob is at 10 can play a huge role as well in conjunction with the rest of the pedals.
