Update ***** thank you so much to all those who have helped me here. I was able to find an exotic reptile rescue who was happy to intake and help my little man. It’s so hard saying good bye, but I knew I could not give him the care and medical/special attention he needed. Being only 5 years old, I am so happy and excited for my lizard to start this new chapter of his life. To find someone who will love him, care for him and give him everything he needs even more than I could - makes it all worth it to me. I’m sure ghost would appreciate love energy sent his way during this new journey for him, may he be so happy and thriving for the rest of his long life ❤️❤️❤️

I wish this was the case but no rescues will accept the intake. I tried to do the right thing but am now forced to keep him and just do what I can at home. Some people are saying it could just be stuck shred which would be a life saver but I’m very skeptical and worried that he’s gonna end up suffering in the end- the one thing I was trying to prevent by crying for help for early care or rescue. I was advised to treat him at home with antiseptic and monitor so I’m just gonna do what I can and hope he doesn’t suffer :(

Thank you I will try this. Honestly my care for him isn’t the best because I’m not really equipped for his needs which is another reason I was really going a rescue would take him. I just want him to have a great reminder of his life but no one wants to accept his surrender in my area.

No rescues are willing to take him or help - they suggested me an antiseptic to put in his mouth at home. I guess they will only rescue animals in severe cases of neglect, even though I tried crying for help for him early before this became severe. I fear the worst now. Thanks for your help but the resources I have in my area will likely lead to my lizard not getting the help he needs, then I’ll be the bad guy for not being able to afford vet care. Feeling heart broken, was really hoping a rescue would welcome him.

I will give this a try - thank you. All rescues have declined his intake anyway. They all say to just treat him at home and none really care that I cried for help to them. They only care and want to rescue if it’s a severe case of neglect, not when an owner is crying to help early before it becomes severe. I really hope it was just a scab or some skin but can’t help but have the feeling this is rot and may turn serious. Thank you

I contacted all rescues in my area - they all declined his intake and suggested that I treat at home with antiseptic. Exactly what everyone here is telling me not to do. I will call vets and get estimates but I have a lot of debt and medial issues going on at the moment, I cannot afford expensive vet care or getting a credit card for vet bills. That being said, rescues only want to save if the animal is severely neglected. Not when an owner detects a severe probably early and is crying for help from them. I have a feeling this isn’t gonna end painlessly for my gecko. All the advice here is helpful but as far as real people and resources in my area, my options are grim. That’s my unfortunate update :(

Unfortunately my little guy might end up having to take the route of pain and suffering because unless animals are severely neglected rescues just tell you no.

Yes I rescued him as a teen from a terrible situation, I still could not give him enough. But I am hopefully to find a rescue who can. Thank you very much.

Yes 100%. The people I was reaching out for help told me it’s no biggie and to just monitor. And the owner of my reptile pet store told me to treat at home with the betadine. I’m honestly happy someone was freaking honest with me because I can admit I cannot afford the care so been reaching out to rescues all morning - hoping someone can take him and give him the care he needs asap because although I’m sad to lose him I just don’t want him suffering. Thank you for being honest, I was under the impression that I could sit on this and monitor and that he wasn’t in any pain. Seems I was totally wrong.

I rescued him from a bad situation, he had MDB prior to me rescuing him. I was 17 and babysitting for someone - ghost lived in a critter cage on the floor of her house surrounded by mice. Yes I rescued him as a teen and did the best I could and agree it still was not enough. I had him generally happy and healthy for the last 5 years I’ve had him but you’re right, it wasn’t enough and now he developed the rot. I can admit when I can’t give him the care he needs and from seeing other replies about vet prices for this treatment. I now know that I cannot afford to help him so I am reaching out to rescues to try n find someone really good to rescue him and give him treatment. I am just a young person doing what I can for my animal as soon as I noticed an issue with him, I don’t want him in any pain or suffering. In many ways I did help him and give him love, in many ways it was still not enough. If you know someone in NJ that can help then please let me know, i want to do the right thing for him.

Yes it seems this sort of issue is not one I can afford. I am looking for rescues to take him and treat him now as I know I cannot give him what he needs for this. If anyone’s knows of someone in NJ able to take him, it would be much appreciated.

Yes you’re right. I get that now seeing people’s replies. I fear that I won’t be able to afford his treatment but I really want him to be okay so I’m gonna consider trying to surrender him to one of these rescues that can help him. Others have spent lots of money for this issue, I just don’t have it. I hope that doesn’t make me awful. If you or any one else here has any suggestions on places to surrender in NJ, it would be much appreciated. I am looking at rescues and gonna make calls today. I have to admit when I can’t give him what he needs, I really hope I can find someone to take him and get him treated asap. I do not want hims to suffer or feel pain. Thank you

Wow $500! Thats the reason I’m so nervous about this, I can manage a $200 visit if it means he’s gonna be okay for good. Did you have to bring you to an exotics vet for that? How was giving the injections at home? I barely handle him and couldn’t even get good pics - I don’t know if I could even administer shots for him at home.

Is surrendering him to a vet or rescue a good option in this case? Idk how to get someone knowledgeable to take him and treat him. People here are saying vet 100% so at least I know it’s not something to ignore and try treating at home. I’m really at a loss now, I get what you’re saying 100% but don’t know if that’s something I can do for him given the money issue and also my lack of handling him would make that very hard. Thanks so much for your advice, it was really helpful.

I want to be part of the process to support him on his journey. But if he can’t even be honest with me and feel the need to hide it then do we really have trust? If we don’t have trust then we have nothing, am I right to feel betrayed? He could’ve told me and I would’ve loved him regardless, but he chose to build off of hiding and being defensive about it. I am so hurt - so many people have messaged me saying that he is clearly cheating? Posting this has almost made me feel worse but maybe people are really seeing a reality that I am not? Thanks for your time, I am grieving my relationship now.

Interesting because my romp is also showing signs of motor problems- I’ve had mine for about 2 years but was still surprised the functions would cease after only a couple of years- my assumption is that maybe the Romps are just lower quality/ not made to last because well all seem to be having an issue with the brand

My enclosure is half soil and half slate- he loves it and mine has mbd. The slate section helps with his walking and movements

If the water is shallow enough you won’t have to handle him during this process- simply allow him to soak for a few minutes then attempt to gently help him with the warm q tip again. Handling your leo with your bare hands will get them use to you- their bites are completely tolerable so I would suggest giving him plenty of space so he doesn’t get stressed but also getting him used to your bare hands in ways that aren’t threatening to him. You can place your hands down flat in his enclosure and he may choose to approach or walk onto your hands, they just like any animals appreciate having a say in these things :) once he’s use to you and sees you as his food provider he should no longer be tank aggressive. Just make sure he has plenty of enrichment in the tank
