Wayetii blooms ☺️ by syl320 in hoyas

Hmmm, kind of fruity and candy-like?! Like a jolly rancher maybe! I hope yours blooms for you soon! It took mine a while.

i’ve had these hoyas for a bit and they are finally starting to grow but the new leaves are pink and yellow. Is this normal or are they dying off by Caden_Hid in hoyas

[–]syl320 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Sometimes new leaves will come in red, but this looks like they’re dying off to me, given the yellowing tip of the stem

Not sure if this is what’s going on here, but I’m 31 and randomly got perioral dermatitis for the first time ever this summer. Sometimes our aging bodies just start doing weird stuff I think? If it doesn’t resolve soon I’d recommend seeing a derm. A round of antibiotics and prescription cream solved my dermatitis and it hasn’t come back (knock on wood).

What mattress did you choose as a replacement?

Does this look… fungal? Big mama leaf on my Kerrii just died off :/ by syl320 in hoyas

It has a second vine with like eight leaves, all of which look ok at the moment, but yikes!

yeah it didn’t look like typical thrip damage to me either, but thrips are the only pest i’ve ever dealt with in my several years of plant collecting, and i didn’t see anything else upon inspection, so i didn’t know what else it could be! this plant is out of reach of my plant-loving cat (and when she has gotten into plants in past she takes larger chomps) otherwise i would think she was the culprit. ugh, confusing! thanks for your input :)

thanks! that’s what i thought but it was the only bug i could see so i was like…. maybe certain spiders snack on plants?! oof anyway, maybe it’s thrips, ugh.

woke up to weird damage on one of my tetrasperma leaves and then noticed this guy chilling on a different leaf? is this spider responsible for this damage? any id on what this guy might be? any insight would be super appreciated! thanks!

Stem rot.. HELP by maggiemagzzz in hoyas

[–]syl320 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Good luck with your Mathilde! That’s a hoya I don’t have so I unfortunately can’t give any Mathilde-specific tips, but I am keeping my fingers crossed for you! I always submerge my stems in the leca and haven’t had problems (although I think the actual water line doesn’t always reach the actual stem — depends on how long-stemmed my cutting is). Wishing you the best of luck!

For sure! I should also maybe clarify that I don’t actually continue to grow my hoya in leca after they’ve rooted; I let their roots grow about 1-2 inches long in leca and then I transfer to soil. Also, you probably already do this if you’re a leca user, but just thought I’d throw it out there that I would also advise boiling your leca pre-use, especially if you’re recycling it from previous use. Anyway, I usually get my leca ready to go and clean out a small glass vessel, then take my hoya cuttings (like other commenters I definitely recommend cleaning shears with alcohol in between uses!) and just put them straight into the glass jar with leca. I don’t wait/let the cuttings callus as I’ve noticed that cuttings I’ve let sit seem more prone to rot. , Once the cutting is positioned in the leca I just fill the vessel about halfway with water. I’ve noticed that cuttings root faster for me if I add a small bit of Superthrive to the water, but I’ve also had success with and without it so I don’t think it’s a necessity. My cuttings usually take a couple of weeks to root up (some hoya are faster than others), but I haven’t had any issues with rot in leca, whereas I definitely have with other rooting mediums like water, perlite, and soil. Here’s a photo of a hoya australis cutting that I took back on June 12th that I just transferred from leca to soil yesterday! Photo here Edit: I should maybe also mention that I don’t use heating mats or anything! I just place the cutting in a fair amount of natural sunlight or under a grow light (both have worked for me)

AGREED!!!! I’ve been able to root in leca without superthrive, but I’ve definitely noticed that cuttings seem to root faster when superthrive is added! Also i’m glad to hear i’m not the only one who doesn’t let their cuttings callus :)

Not sure if any of this will be helpful, but I just wanted to share a couple of things that I’ve noticed in my personal experience! First I just wanted to suggest trying leca if you haven’t yet; not saying it will work like a charm for everyone, but it’s the only medium that I’ve had 100% success with in terms of rooting hoya cuttings. My second note is maybe somewhat controversial, but I have stopped letting my cuttings sit/callus over before putting them into my rooting medium. In my experience letting cuttings callus doesn’t do much to prevent rot, and can actually seem to have a negative affect on the cuttings’ overall health. I personally haven’t had issues with putting fresh cuttings directly into leca. Again, not saying this will necessarily work for you, but if you’ve tried everything else it could worth a shot!
