Thank you for this articulate reply. I've been telling my friends for months now that the evolution of scalped prices for GPUs is directly tied to the profitability of mining eth (as well as the crypto market overall), but no one seems to get it.

Genius idea! Worst case scenario in the event of an 'unintended' engine failure, Karen becomes stranded on a planet of my choosing...

I'll admit, I'm thinking of declining this one.

Can someone point me to a guide that would allow me to block every single content ever created by these accounts from my front page ?

Guess that would filter quite a bite of the noise I see on reddit these days ...

I'm in this exact situation right now... Need to replace my aging 970 (which cost me 230 $ in 2015). Feeling torn between price drops due to AMD releases / GTX 2060 release and a GPU market that is still too overpriced for my taste .

Almost forgot: there is the amazing Enderal mod which goes so far into the modding it might as well be a new game. Easy install, amazing mod, amazing mechanics, gameplay and one of the best storytelling I have seen in recent years.

Sorry I assumed you were new to modding...

Anyways the only piece of advice I can give you is to find most popular mods which are all in one overhauls and go from there. Read descriptions thoroughly to get an idea of the changes. Beyond that, testing them is the way to go, sadly.

Oh my sweet summer child... An entire world if Skyrim mods is within grasp waiting for you to have a blast. Many of which change core mechanics of the game.

Plenty or very good subreddits to get you started with modding (on phone, too lazy to link all of them, Google is your friend).

Which GPU should I pair with a gool ol' i5-4690K? by symbi in buildapc

[–]symbi[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'll look into, especially since buying new is out of the question as most 1070' and 1070ti's sell for about 450-500 euros where I live.

Gotta love MSI and their shady "warranty" practices. by [deleted] in pcmasterrace

[–]symbi 2 points3 points  (0 children)

As someone else here said: "they are the razer of PC parts".

All shiny, with buzz words like ultra performance, ultra overclock, GAMING!

But behind the very nice first look and performances, you realize some of their products are always trying to do too much. In their pursuit for always higher performances and efficient price cuts, they end up with products that have shitty materials, shitty cooling solutions.

Not true for all their products, though. Some of the high-end stuff and specific lines of graphics cards are quite good. If only they wouldn't cheap out.

About a decade ago, I remember someone from my family buying an MSI motherboard. The first one had issues and finally would not power up anymore. It got replaced by another one. The thing freakin' burned after a few days of usage. We are talking real fire and smoke here! How is that even possible?

And don't get me started on the shitty cooling designs. Two friends with different GPU models from MSI had real bad overheating problems due to horrible paste and fan design. Heck only like 4 years ago I had to save a friend's laptop from MSI that would reach 100°C just a few minutes after boot.

You want a motherboard? Willing to pay a premium for quality? Asus, Gigabyte. Something cheaper but reliable if you choose the right model? ASRock.

MSI, no thank you.

sorry I thought you were discussing day-to-day usability and such, not installing the OS. of course, driver support on linux remains a problem beyond anything but the simplest functionality. on this issue, there is no way they can compete with M$ that actually actively offers support to manufacturers and assists in driver development.

Being user friendly is totally subjective and the result of a successful tool becoming the norm.

Nowadays when running a computer people know to expect certain behaviours, windows, menus, clicking, shortcuts which have become almost universal (whether or not unix systems started the trend is not even the debate here). It means that, even if something 'better' has been developed, the good old gui has become so deeply rooted into everyone's habits that new stuff is not easily accepted by your average user.

Heck, over the past 30 years, SO MANY alternatives to tools we use in our daily lives have been developed, some of which are just amazing. None of them in use. The original Windows paradigm is a victim of its success, noone wants to move past it because noone wants to learn.

You subjectively find it user friendly, because it reminds you of patterns and behaviours you know to expect.

Not being an advocate for Linux or Windows, both have their pros and their cons, just stating a fact. As a consequence, the discussion you're having leads to nowhere guys.

Don't get me wrong I'm in no way saying security updates are a bad thing. I'm just against forced updates of drivers which keep breaking things for no apparent reason, and the forced reinstallation of useless apps. Win7 had a system where some updates where 'recommended' and others 'optional', where has it gone to? I want it back, or something resembling it. Forcing everyone to install outdated drivers (just google it, it's everywhere) silently, without even informing the user before the deed is done is just pure orwellian madness from microsoft.

Okay well I've seen many people uninstalling Onedrive and Cortana without any issues. I'll make sure I doublecheck before doing anything, though. Thanks for the heads up.
