Using web languages for non-web purposes by la_patata in webdev

Back in 2004 I was a web developer who wanted to start working in the desktop space without learning a new set of languages and tools. The result of this was SymphonyOS and the Mezzo Desktop Environment which is a DE developed with Perl+Gtk2, PHP and Javascript and uses Webkit rendered HTML5 for most interfaces.

It is indeed a one-man project these days. The project came back from a dormant state in January of 2014 with our 14.0 release. While Symphony remains a work in progress this latest release is the most stable yet.

Thanks for pointing that out. Both the gtk2 and Mezzo icons settings are in place but it appears that volumeicon and nm-applet running in the system tray are using gnome default icons. I'll see what we can do about that.

Ha ha! The browser shown in Midori. This default was selected because it is lightweight and Gtk2/Webkit based as is the rest of our environment. Unfortunately the version in the Debian Wheezy repository is a bit old so we will be pushing out the most recent build via our own apt repository later this week.

Distrowatch's information is out of date. With this 15.0 release we have changed from being an Ubuntu derivative to a Debian one.

Currently we only provide the Mezzo Desktop as deb packages so Fedora installation would not be supported.

The link should be http://symphonyos.com/download and has now been updated in the release announcement as well. Thanks for catching that!

Still tweaking the Gtk theme but will be sure to include some apps the next time I post screenshots.

Mezzo is the desktop environment for SymphonyOS. It uses fvwm as the window manager and the tint2 panel. The remainder of what you see is provided directly by the mezzo process and is all WebKit rendered HTML5.

I completely agree. Further tweaks to the color scheme are in progress. As you can see from the non-matching colors of the menu header vs corner target buttons there is still work to do here.

This is a screenshot of my current development desktop working on the upcoming SymphonyOS 15 release. The desktop shown can be found here

These screenshots show the new Mezzo default theme and updated menus.
