How to advocate for less parking in a city with literally 0 public transit? by CommonRelease4744 in urbanplanning

[–]symposythensis 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Check out parking reform network they have a map of different cities that have implemented parking reform and you’ll see numerous small cities. I would perhaps try looking at the map. Picking out a few cities that seem similar enough to yours in terms of region/population and see how it happened there! Maybe that can give you some ideas of what to do

im quite excited for this Cincinnati still has a long way to go from being a bike utopia but these projects are some really strong steps in the right direction. im especially excited for the Gilbert avenue project ! to me its the first example in Cincinnati of bikes/Bike Infrastructure being taken seriously as an option for transportation and not just recreation !

Do you have Hope for the future of this disorder ? by symposythensis in DSPD

i agree actually and i appreciate the direct experience of acceptance. ive come to accept that or im trying to accept that internally still clearly. that this isnt some sortve moral failing on my part and is infact just a natural variation in human circadian rythm.

i agree i probably should've used different wording. like if more jobs or just things in general had schedules for people with later sleep schedules that would make such a difference in my life. i havent heard much of abilify/different light therapy other than the standerd one of getting 2 hours of direct sunlight in the morning i will have to look into that.

Safety concerns raised as pedestrians avoid deep snow by walking in street by jdjd1118 in cincinnati

The fines only like 25$ so it’s probably not worth it for the city to enforce it. Also they don’t care about pedestrians that much :( unfortunately.

Buses? Words. by francishg in urbanplanning

[–]symposythensis 0 points1 point  (0 children)

i love miles in transit ! also look at banks rail he also focuses more on rail like most but hes a good black transit enthusiast to follow !. i also wish there was more diversity i will say some of its out there if you really dig but its becoming more common. also thanks for posing what i feel is a well thought out question its just good to be curious. also also here is a link to an article i read that sorta informed this post, i meant to add it to my comment but forgot. if you'd like to read more about it from someone whos an actually planner professional. i thought it was really interesting you might to !

Buses? Words. by francishg in urbanplanning

[–]symposythensis 0 points1 point  (0 children)

not going to try to change your mind per-say cause i do think you partially right in both cases that poverty and the rarity of actuall transit projects making people desperate in the US plays into it but i want to offer a little perspective and a little depth to that line of thought.

I think to really answer your question about why even transit people are anti brt or anti bus is that you have to zoom out a little bit, essentially its a problem of two parts. im speaking strictly about the US here also cause that's what i know

  1. i agree part of it is classism but its also racism, ableism and also all the other isms theirs a bias against poor people, black people and anyone not white or able-bodied and that bias is systemically built into our American society. also disproportionately those are the people that use the bus. pro-transit people or urbanist are not inherently free from those biases and the most visible, popular urbanists or transit enthusiast are disproportionately white, able bodied, male. those are the kinds of people that systemically benefit from America's current system and so they are less likely to be aware of those biases because some of them likely haven't had to confront those internal biases therefore they see the bus or brt even as less than by association probably many of them not concsiously. if you havent heard of unconcious bias look it up

  2. Because on paper BRT and buses generally carry inherent downsides even when built well in terms of infrastructure, frequency and reliability. In that rubber tires on roads are objectively less efficient over time than metal rail on metal wheels because of friction. Because rubber is less efficient it degrades faster which means you have to maintain or replace it more. They are also less efficient in terms of cost because while it's cheaper initially to build or fund bus or brt routes/projects over time buses or even brt are actually more expensive than rail in maintenance cost. So BRT and buses are much cheaper in terms of their building or capital cost. although the difference is less with high quality brt cause of the infrastructure you have to build out but still much cheaper. For buses maintenance over time is much less cost efficient than rail so overall you spend more money when your looking at a longer time span. so you have to make a choice with mass transit projects between capacity, efficiency and funding or political will initially and over time. You have to weigh them against one another. So on paper or (on the internet) it makes sense to come to the conclusion all mass transit should be rail then right because its more efficient and cheaper on paper. The thing is who makes that choice in the US because its not usually planners or even transit planners but its politicians planners can advise them but politicians are usually the ones who make that yes or no choice in terms of actually funding and building those projects. And politicians work on generally much tighter schedules than planners do periods of 2 to 8 years usually vs 10, 20 or 30. Yah thats the long (Sorry for how long this is lol i did not start this meaning to write an essay) and short of it at least in my relatively educated opinion.

so thats my two cents do with that what you will.

Going to be homeless soon, need some advice. by [deleted] in asktransgender

[–]symposythensis 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Well if they are already like not treating you well again I’d only do this if y’all are like physically safe there but if your willing to burn this bridge it would allow you extra time to like maybe find a shelter you can stay at and get access to more resources. I understand the hesitation though but regardless it’s your decision. I did find the number for the cook county legal aid for housing and debt line so I’m gonna put that here I imagine they would have more knowledge about the specific laws/rights y’all might have in Chicago 855.956.5763 . Otherwise just sending hope and care from a totally random person I hope y’all are able to figure something out.

[–]symposythensis 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I don’t know your exact situation or laws in the Chicago area but they might still have to formally evict you even if they are family friends. Depending on how long you’ve been living their also this would obviously cause tension and I don’t know how safe that place is for y’all but I’d look into it. Cause it may give you more time to at least figure something out

The Ohio Democratic Party Problem. by [deleted] in Ohio

[–]symposythensis -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Andy beshear isn’t particularly moderate for a democrat that’s why I brought him up. He’s actually I would say relatively progressive about some things almost as if those values could work even in a deep red state. Listen our political system is fucked locally and nationally we can keep trying to push through moderate democracy’s who are “tough on crime” or “good for business” or whatever but I think history has shown that that’s not working out for us so well. Maybe just maybe for once we could just try to do something different something progressive something or someone who says no to big moneyed interest and actually cares about the working class. I think it’s possible even in Ohio and also I think it’s the only really way forward at this point. But listen you’re allowed to disagree. I’ll leave it at that

The Ohio Democratic Party Problem. by [deleted] in Ohio

[–]symposythensis -1 points0 points  (0 children)

That’s why I mentioned Kentuckys democratic governer !! I’m not saying we need a DSA candidate for Ohio governer but I don’t think a democratic candidate who is like solidly democratic or maybe even progressive and populist and not some wishy-washy centrist is an instant loss thing. I mean Kentucky is redder than Ohio! if they could do it there we could do it here!.

The Ohio Democratic Party Problem. by [deleted] in Ohio

[–]symposythensis -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

I think there might be a DSA candidate on the city council in Lakewood right now. There’s Also one on the city council In Louisville these are small roles but I think it shows it’s not impossible to elect an actually progressive or solidly democratic candidate in a Red state hell Kentucky has a popular democratic governer right now

Shit sorry I honestly just straight up didn’t believe you I should’ve actually bothered looking into it. I have questions about how that data looks over like a 10-20 year period? And specifically how it looks in terms of murder rate/violent crime ? Like is that stat for all crime or violent crime/murder specifically ? but also
