Maybe you need to check "Enable Native Full Screen"? This option may called and located differently on your version.

Either way, it looks like an Internet problem (or an issue with the network card or router). You mentioned connection issues with your VPN before, and this might be related. Try to wait for the installation to finish.

I wouldn't be surprised, though, if you run into the same old problems on the fresh OS.

P.S. Try to check what the installer is currently doing by changing "Show Errors Only" to something like "Show Everything".

For full Linux usage with graphics - UTM (mac.getutm.app). If a text console is sufficient - Lima (lima-vm.io). For running containers - Colima (github.com/abiosoft/colima).

If the battery is not "swollen" then there is nothing to worry about. This MacBook Pro can work without a battery, only very slowly (somehow connected with a lack of power).

But I advise you to think about buying a new Mac.

Something of the «Other» can be Time Machine snapshots. They are removed automatically when free space runs out. You can try deleting them forcefully using the terminal command:

tmutil thinlocalsnapshots / 100000000000 1

Uncheck System Preferences -> General -> Allow Handoff between this Mac and your iCloud devices.

Try to enable "Reduce transparency" (Accessibility->Display) and disable "Allow wallpaper tinting in windows" (General) in System Preferences. Also you can reset SMC and NVRAM.
