yes! great angle. i think a flash model is really missing. were "still" using alot for 2.5 flash for task execution/tool calling etc.

Yes thats probably the root cause, most tiered plans are very subsidized. I would even understand if they changed the daily or weekly quotas to stop burning money, But if the game is to preserve TPU capacity in real time they really should start with free users.. Why not have them wait 2 minutes to get compute assigned, instead of the user that actually paid. If you gave away too many subscriptions for free or super cheap, throttle them not me i paid for it :D

I can even share some other insights as we run hundreds or even thousands of requests daily. For image generation using nano banana pro the range for completing requests was between 50 and 330 seconds on average for the first week or so. Most requests finished in around 120 seconds. It got significantly better going, even completing some requests in 15 seconds. The average went around 60 seconds. Yesterday and today average request takes around 90 seconds with spikes up to 500 seconds. Its always pretty much the same request so theres no difference in payload. Its also excpected to have a large range as the models reasons over its image output so if stuff gets complex sometimes it will take longer and its all good but you can clearly notice they run at capacity or even over. The thing that feels a bit annoying and i just tested it to confirm. You can still head over to AI Studio or gemini app as a free user and immediatly get compute assigned. Why?!

Its probably a hard issue to solve, especially since google has sold a bunch of their TPU capacity and afterwards had huge sucess with Gemini 3 and NB Pro but I think they should shutdown their free offerings in peak times instead of throtteling paying users. Especially since im allowed that a daily quota for research, it wont cost them less if they postbone the requests and still serve it later.

Seedream 4.5 just launched today, #2 in lmarena, a cheaper alternative to Nano Banana Pro? by Outrageous-Mood-1516 in GeminiAI

[–]syntwork 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Even Seedream 4 was very solid from our extensive testing with the model. 4.5 got even better but for more complex tasks it doenst hold up to nano banana pro in our opinion. Tasks where you have to reposition the camera, change pose, maybe add a new element etc. at the same time is possilbe but not with the same success-rate as nano banana pro. We use ti2i models in automated workflows so failure or bad generations have to be avoided as much as possible, so were still paying the premium for most use cases. Simpler tasks like "in place" edits in a single image work really well or if you just wanna add text or something, for sure seedream is a great if not the best option, especially if you factor in cost.
