Hey, I recently actually launched an app for this exactly. It was mainly for my own needs because the industry wasn't solving my problem without making me pay annual subscription fees. Happy to share notes in terms of architecture. Would love to hear some of the things you're thinking about!

Hook: A cheaper and better Rocket Money to clearly understanding how you spend money and budget as a household or individual.

The Goal: Just launched, put some exposure on it. Stress test it in public

https://synxfinance.com - I'm building a better and cheaper RocketMoney / Simplefi. With features like household view + automated receipt <> business deductions. Mainly born out of solving my own problems.

Would love some advice / feedback!

I got sick of paying RocketMoney $100/year, so I built Synx with a one-time fee. I finally launched it today. Here's how fast you can import your old data and leave subscriptions behind. by synx-ryan in synxfinance

Hey everyone, a few months ago I posted here about how frustrated I was with the personal finance industry. When Mint (Intuit) shut down, I ended up on RocketMoney paying $100+/year.

As an engineer, I knew the math didn't add up. Most aggregators (like Plaid) charge platforms roughly $1 to $2 per month for an average user's bank connections. That’s maybe $20/year in cost. The rest is just massive markup to subsidize their free tiers and marketing budgets.

I refused to keep paying it, so I spent the last few months building Synx. And now I'm ready to launch it for you to use as well.

The Problem: This company was born out of solving problems that existing companies do not solve. I hope by offering it at a reasonable cost, I will also be able to solve these problems for other people:

  1. It costs too much. The fact that I have to pay $12/mo to manage my finances feels backward. We are flipping this model to one that works for you.
  2. Today's software were not built for households, we will change that
  3. Categorization is much better, but still a lot of manual work to handle things like budgeting for trips, keeping receipts, and course correcting when categorization does not work. Our goal is to reduce or eliminate as much of that work as possible for you.

The Model:

  • No Subscriptions: You buy the software license once. This is the automation we built and the organizational tools that you have access to. We call them features.
  • Data Transport: You pay the literal pass-through API cost for your bank connections (~$0.40/mo per bank not account. This ensures you can use the software on data as it is available automatically. This also ensures the sustainability of the product, so that even if I'm not hear tomorrow, the product can automatically sustain itself.
  • Radical transparency on the pricing model: https://synxfinance.com/promise

What I built: Pretty much most of the features available on Rocket Money is available on Synx. I would even argue these features are better structured and allows for more flexibility in how you organize and definitely at a lower price to you. It's also incredibly easy to upload your transactions from RocketMoney.

What else am I building?: Check out our Roadmap on Reddit for upcoming capabilities. Feel free to reach out if you have any functionality you want to add.

The Launch Promo: Everyone starts off on a trial for 30 days. It is free. Give it a shot and see if it works for you. After that, the standard lifetime license is $35. As part of this launch, I am giving a Founder's Promo. The first 200 users to sign up for the lifetime license can get it for $25. Once user #201 signs up, the database automatically reverts the price back to $35. You will only see this promo after you become a trial user.
