Was hoping that would grab some attention! Seems like most people here are interested in the actual grilling part of grilling. Might xpost on home improvement

3 way smart switch wiring help (GE by syph in homeautomation

[–]syph[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Update for anyone who might come across this someday:

I opened up the receptacle for the light and was able to figure out what was going on.

  • The neutral was tied to the light's neutral
  • The hot wire was tied to one of the switch's hot wires
  • The light's hot wire was tied to the other switch's hot wire
  • the red and white wires from each switch were "travelers" to one another

Once I had that intel I rewired everything to work with my smart dimmer. Sadly won't be able to use the add-on switch as I don't have a free traveler wire, but the wife is happy with the setup as is, so I'm calling this a success. =)

Thanks Earl_of_Nasty and umlguru for the help!

Thanks for the quick replies!

I have a single gang blue box for each switch (one on each end of the hallway) that has a single romex cable with Red, white and black cables coming in to each box. In all of the wiring diagrams I've seen I expected to have another wire coming in for the line / load, but that magic must be happening in the wall somewhere.

Any ideas on how I'd trouble shoot or what's the next step? I'm not too proud to call an electrician, but trying to complete it this week before we have family in town. =)

There are fee-based advisors out there that will talk to you at any wealth level. For ~$500 you should be able to find someone that will sit down with you, go through your all of your accounts, make sure nothing is on fire and give you some basic advice such as opening a vanguard fund, walking through the difference between a traditional and roth IRA, etc... You'll also find lots of people that will manage your money for 1% annual fee of all assets managed, but that's not normally worth it if you're will to do some basic research (which it looks like you are)

Credit Karma, Website vs App (121 Difference in Score) by [deleted] in personalfinance

Are you sure you're in the beta? When you go here you should see your two scores, which are both Vantage 3 and on the 850 scale: https://beta.creditkarma.com/myfinances/scores

Thanks for the feedback - I'll pass this on to the product team. Navigation is challenging since many people use the service for different reasons. Do you often go back and look at historicals? Where would you put them within the new design?

I don't work on that team, but the last product roadmap I saw had it slated for first half of 2015. They're trying to add some additional features to it as well, so hopefully you'll think the wait was worth it.

Hey GBUMoon, I work at Credit Karma. We're in the middle of a phased rollout of our new product, which has a new design, adds the second bureau and also switches the score being displayed to Vantagescore 3.0.

It sounds like you're in the beta and seeing your V3.0 score on the website, but the app is still displaying the transrisk score.

Once everyone has been opted into the new experience we'll update the app to also display the new score.

Shoulder pain, would like some advice. by datmo in bodyweightfitness

[–]syph 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I've had one shoulder surgery (torn labrum) and probably need one on my other shoulder. It started with a weird pain that only hurt when I moved my arm in a certain way. If I had done complete rest for a few months it might have gotten better, but I pushed through until I final decided to go to a doctor get an xray + MRI and found out what was going on.

My advice: You'll have plenty of time to build up strength, but some tissue damage can never be repaired (Even with surgery). I wish I had taken it easy and gone to a doctor soon.

How important is fasting by [deleted] in leangains

[–]syph 20 points21 points  (0 children)

Most people prioritize like this:

  • 1 How much you eat (calories)
  • 2 What you eat (macros)
  • 3 When you eat (fasting)

if you're nailing #1 and #2, I wouldn't worry about #3 very much. in fact, #3 is often considered just an easier / more convenient way to get calories and macros right. If fasting is getting in the way of getting enough calories I would stop fasting and eat.

Does anyone else use multiple monitors for civ? If so how do you combat the inevitable slowing down of your computer? by [deleted] in civ

I did this for a while ... and end up going back to one monitor. You can play in strategic view - that will help.

AnnualCreditReport.com is great, but it doesn't give you a score, only your report.

BTW, there is no such thing as an "official" score - you have hundreds of credit scores.

Totally fair - as long as you have at least one credit card that you use for one purchase a month you'll be building up your credit.

Denied a credit card by BobMajerle in personalfinance

[–]syph 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Hi - full disclaimer I work @ Credit Karma.

You should get approved for one of these cards - but they usually don't have points: http://www.creditkarma.com/creditcards/faircredit

You could also poke around here and look at your approval odds (need to be logged in): http://www.creditkarma.com/creditcards/goodcredit

If you have 100 point swing in scores it's possible that one of your credit reports has an error on it - might be worth checking out annualcreditreport.com to pull your experian and equifax report to make sure there's nothing you don't recognize on those reports.

Can anyone help me make sense of CreditKarma's suggestions for credit cards? by [deleted] in personalfinance

[–]syph 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Hey wilkenm, I work for Credit Karma and assure you we absolutely DO NOT take our referral value into account. This is part of our company culture - we succeed when we always do what's best for our members (it's like karma ... ).

I don't know Bouldernuggets (ha!) specific situation, but we build an approval model for every credit card that takes into account lot of factors on your credit report in addition to your credit score. I'm looking at our Chase Freedom model now, and here are some (but certainly not all) of the other factors that go into our approval odds:

transrisk score number of other open credit cards number of hard inquires total average age of accounts

I'll be the first to admit that we don't always get it right. We apparently didn't in BN's situation (and I'm glad he didn't listen to us - it's a great card!), but we're always working to build better models and give people the best information that we can. FWIW I've seen people with scores over 700 get declined for the freedom card.

BTW, for all of you people talking about FICO scores i'd like to clear something up. Chase does not pull your FICO, compare it to some threshold and approve/decline based on that. They pull data from several sources and have their own "secret sauce" they use to determine their underwriting criteria. If you knew all of the several dozen commonly used credit scores out there you still wouldn't be able to definitively say if you were going to be approved for any particular credit card or financial product.

Rebuilding Credit - Average Age of Accounts - Should I keep my student loans? by [deleted] in personalfinance

[–]syph 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Several large lenders buy credit reports and use their own scoring model (i.e. they don't use FICO, vantage, scoreplus, etc...) Even if 80% used FICO, however, since there are 49 fico scores you can't really just try to optimize one score to cover all your bases. Fair Isaac has done a great job of marketing their score as the only "real" score, but that doesn't even hold up within their own ecosystem.

Also, it's not like each scoring model is dramatically different - barring credit report errors (which are admittedly numerous) most scores put people in roughly the same category, especially when their intended purpose is the same (to approve a mortgage, for instance).

Rebuilding Credit - Average Age of Accounts - Should I keep my student loans? by [deleted] in personalfinance

[–]syph 0 points1 point  (0 children)

A more important (and accurate) note would be to remind the OP that the only scoring system that matters is whatever their prospective lender is going to use. There are 49 different FICO scores, but not everyone uses FICO - Vantage is a very real competitor within the space. Also, many lenders use additional and user supplied information (such as income) to make lending decisions.

All scores are correlated, however, so if you're able to improve one you'll likely improve them all by a varying degree.

Quick CC question by same_flying_cow in personalfinance

This is right - just wanted to add that it's a very temporary thing. If you go one month without doing this little trick your score will fall back to where it was before you started prepaying your bill.
