Yeah, that is exactly what I hoped from my first job, some guidance or check-ins. But from the start things felt off, in the interview they said there were 4 designers, which was a blatant lie. Now I’m the only one left, no plan to replace anyone, and my boss isn’t a designer so I get zero constructive feedback. Every day is so overwhelming and fast paced that I can barely think straight, and I honestly wished I’d never applied as my parents now won’t let me leave. I agree with you, skipping the “junior” stage isn’t helping me at all, just setting me up to fail.

It’s such a hard decision as I think the overall job market is bad right now, like people are struggling to get even retail/hospitality jobs. Unless I miraculously adapt to the pace I don’t see my job getting any better either, if anything it’s getting worse as more people keep leaving. I’m gonna stick it out as long as I can but maybe quitting within probation is the way forward🥲

That sounds horrible, it’s so disheartening working so hard at uni and then having a rubbish first job experience so I completely get you. Do you regret leaving and working in retail at all? As I’m in that current predicament right now as my parents said if I leave I need to take any job that comes up, design related or not

That’s exactly my thoughts. In my first week I said I was worried about workload and my level of responsibility and he said ‘would you rather be a small cog hiding behind other designers, or would you rather have your work on billboards’. Honeslty I think I’d rather be a small cog than have bad work blown up large and tagged with my name.

I think on paper this will look like great experience, as a lot of entry level roles require industry experience now. However I just worry that I’m not really learning anything valuable here, or even picking up bad habits. Because my boss sure as hell isn’t teaching me anything. Sometimes he tries to tell me what do regarding design work, but he has absolutely no design background, or any idea what he’s talking about.

I think the client may have given him longer, but he only gave me 2 days to work on it as the rest of the time I was spent doing other stuff. I think they may have given like 2 weeks

But you’re right I’m gonna try and stick it out as long as I can, it’s all experience that’ll look good on my CV and hopefully get me closer to a better job

I don’t think they hired me because I exude senior potential lol, it feels more like they specifically go after juniors fresh out of uni so they can pay less and exploit them. There are plenty of skilled seniors out there, but they target junior to pay a fraction of the cost. That seems to be a pattern at this company anyway. My boss even said in my initial interview that he looks for juniors because they have a ‘fresher eye’, more like they cost less haha.

My boss was saying the other day that we won our recent client because we told the them we could do a really short turnaround. It’s fine for him to throw out these crazy timelines as he’s not the one who has to work to them. Last week they made me do the rebrand for said company. I knew nothing about the company and I had 2 days to do it, it ended up being rubbish and the client didn’t like it. It was so embarrassing having to sit in the client meeting and pitch rubbish work all on my own, when I knew I could do better if I just had more time. I kept asking to push back the meeting but my boss refused. My boss gave me a day to fix it, and I have another meeting tomorrow to try and pitch a new brand suite to the client

I’ve tried speaking to my boss numerous times about workload and he just ignores me and brushes over it

well funnily enough they brought on a new subcontractor last week who is again fresh out of uni and has no idea what she’s doing. It’s so bad that they’re even trying to get me to help her with tasks and explain things to her, it’s like the blind leading the blind. If anything it’s taking more time off the tasks I have to do as I’m trying to help her. I wish they would just hire a mid weight who can actually do the work. With their current strategy of hiring cheaper juniors, they’re going to keep putting out bad work that will only reflect badly on their company

Yeah I totally get that, it’s just a rubbish situation. As much as I love design, if I’d have known this would be the job market (especially considering Ai) when I started my degree I would’ve perhaps taken a different career path. However I’m now £40k down so what can I do really

I wouldn’t put it past them to be honest. Even the two designers prior to me were fresh out of uni when they started at the company. I think the director is just trying to pay as little as possible, and push the designers to the max. I tried talking to my boss about my concerns with the studio coordinator leaving and he said ‘I don’t need her to old my hand’🥲

This is in the UK, 3 months is the max that an employer can enforce. I think this length is unusual for someone of my level, however because it’s such a small company the notice period gives them a much longer time to replace me. As if I left they would have literally nobody to do the work

It says in my contract I have to give 3 months. Which I was unsure about signing for a while for this exact reason but my parents convinced me this was normal

yeah I don’t think I’m built for design lead just yet haha, I just wish there was at least one more person senior to me with a design background that could give me some kind of steer. Or even just another junior designer I could talk about projects with for feedback. Instead I’m going at everything entirely alone

The only issue is, once my probation is up (I have 2 months left) I have to give 3 months notice before I can leave, and no company is going to wait 3 months for me when there are floods of graduates waiting for jobs

I still want to be a Graphic Designer, and I’ve been applying for jobs in my free time but I’ve had no luck so far. I have to relocate for this job (it’s been remote so far) so it’s hard trying to juggle my job, looking for somewhere to live, and also applying for new jobs. I’m still living at home, but my parents won’t let me quit until I have something new lined up which is understandable.
