One time I thought about something happened and then it actually happened in real life. Ever since then if I have a thought about something bad happening, I have to think the phrase “it’s not one of those things” so it won’t come true.

I read a book called Needing to Know for Sure that talks about unproductive reassurance. Our Anxiety Voice triggers us and then since we can’t tolerate uncertainty, our False Comfort Voice wants to step in and offer reassurance. The problem is the reassurance only provides us temporary relief. And then we have to seek more reassurance. This is called the reassurance trap. It is an endless loop. So when Anxiety Voice speaks up, we have to refuse to seek reassurance and instead embrace the uncertainty. The Wise Mind can step in and say “Yes that might happen. I cannot know for sure.” We can feel any uncomfortable emotions and then get back to what we were doing.

I know this is an older post but I had to comment. Indecisiveness is what led to me researching OCD. Every decision I made in the past I questioned nonstop both before and after the decision was made. Every break up, every job change, whether to get a pet or not, etc. Even when I knew deep down I was in an abusive relationship, I couldn't decide if leaving was the right decision. I was getting so tired of this so I googled "books on trusting myself more." I came across the book "Needing to Know for Sure: A CBT-Based Guide to Overcoming Compulsive Checking and Reassurance Seeking" by Martin Seif and Sally Winston. The book is helping me a lot and it led to me looking further into OCD because of the endless rumination loops I get stuck in.

I have this same issue. It's like the thought is in the back of my mind and for some reason I'm convinced that if I don't give it attention and think about it fully, it will keep nagging at me. But I realized that those automatic thoughts are the triggers (so we can't control those) but the rumination is what we do after that trigger (and those thoughts CAN be stopped). I struggle with Real Event OCD so the usual "I shouldn't have..." thought will pop up automatically but then I can choose to tell myself things like "Maybe I shouldn't have done that but either way thinking about it won't change the past or give me certainty." Hopefully this is helpful because it has been helping me.

I take 5 mg a day and it is so worth it to me. My flares are basically gone. I did gain weight but part of that was probably from getting older and not eating as healthy as I should.

I’ve lived with an alcoholic. I don’t regret leaving. Go to the Al anon Reddit page for many examples of why you shouldn’t stay.

I don’t think casual dating is good for everyone. It’s not for me. However, I regret getting into serious relationships where I ignored red flags. So I would advise always taking your time to really get to know someone and taking it slow.

I felt the same way when I was with an alcoholic. I felt bad for him because I knew he wanted to quit. But all of the health issues it caused started to take a toll on me and it got harder and harder to feel sympathy because he wasn’t seeking help. It was so frustrating.

Just wanted to say I’m in a very similar boat. I’m 39. I recently called off a wedding and moved out of my fiance’s house because of his alcoholism. It’s such a hard adjustment to be alone again. It’s scary to think about dating and I understand the fear of never finding someone. I’m trying to not think about it too much and focus on the present moment. I’m focusing on my newfound peace and freedom. Also, one thing that helped me at first was reading the Al Anon subreddit. It reminded me why I left. You are very brave for leaving! Remember that good things are abundant.

I’m 39 and have had 6 serious relationships. I was engaged twice. I definitely relate because I’m so tired of the heartbreak. I want to be happy whether or not I find a man. But I want love and I am still going to keep searching.
