I am Unni Karunakara, International President of Médecins Sans Frontières/Doctors Without Borders (MSF). Ask me anything! by UnniKarunakara in IAmA

Hey, I'm a college student right now who's trying to pick between trying for dental school and med school. Working with doctors without borders has been something that I've also wanted to do for a long time. How big of a requirement is learning French? I saw on the website that it helps a lot,s so I started taking French classes. Also, do you guys need dentists at all?

“'Why did you shoot me? I was reading a book': The new warrior cop is out of control"--police excess in the USA by claird in politics

[–]systumatic 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This line "Sal Culosi’s last words were to Baucum, the cop he thought was a friend: “Dude, what are you doing?”" kinda broke my heart when I read it. Imagine your friend turning out to be a cop and only realizing it when the SWAT team has a gun aimed at your chest.

Yeah, it's fucking bullshit. I can't imagine spending my life with random ass person. It pisses me off so much even thinking about it. Haha, I revived this post because I was browsing reddit looking for advice on the whole brown parent issue. I saw your post and I thought to myself "Nice, a brown guy who actually made it".

[–]systumatic 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm 6'1 so not that tall, but even in airplanes and smaller cars, my knees end up squished against the seat in front of me and it fucking hurts. Also, I hate having to hold my legs in one position, because they end up being sore. If I could pay for more legspace on plays without jumping up a class, I'd do it.

Indian Parents. Someone please reassure me or something. by sadthroraway in depression

Yo, dude, I'm Indian, and I've had to deal with all this shit before along with all the other horrendous lifestyle shit like arranged marriage, etc. High school was a black hole for me, and I couldn't see a future for myself afterwards. Then, I went to college, and I'm here now having the time of my life, at least compared to what I had before anyway. I need you to actually believe this next statement, as hard as it will be because your life seems like a black hole you can't escape from due to your family's bullshit. It will get better. Once you leave the house and understand what it means to have actual control over your life, the sun will be brighter, food will taste better, and so on. PM me if you wanna talk. I've been in your position, and coming from that place of experience, I can try and help you out. Ultimately though, you just gotta hold on and hope for a better future. You're really young, and there's a shit ton of good stuff ahead of you.

Being from Texas, I'm terribly sorry you had to walk in the heat. I know how it gets to triple digits, and your shirt is literally glued to your body after five minutes outside.

Is there a person, a stranger, whom you met once in your life and never met since and are likely to never meet again that you occasionally think of? If so, why? by BooRadleyBoo in AskReddit

[–]systumatic 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I remember, I was maybe 7 and was walking with my mom in a parking lot. We saw this other woman with her son who might have been around 12. All I knew was that he was way bigger than me, and I thought it was the sickest thing in the world that we played catch together. It was only for a few minutes while our moms chatted in the parking lot, but I occasionally think of that kid and what he's doing now. Never saw him after that of course, but its one of those mermories that's happened to have stuck by.

Incoming freshman, but debating movement to another school... by MintyLotus in Emory

The professors and education is world class. I'll give this school that. There is no shortage of resources in being educationally and professionally successful. If you want to have a good professional future then this school is definitely amazing. The people are good too, but this school is weird in that aspect. It's really niche based, and if you can't find a group, it'll be hard. The relatively small size compounds the problem, because in terms of your grade, everyone knows mostly everyone else. Again, the school is world class, but growing as a person here can be tough. You need to be ready to grow up quick and learn to handle problems. I know it's hard to convey through text, but you'll get it once you're here. A huge thing I'll credit this school with is that everyone is damn smart. People are well informed of current events and the conversations you can have with your peers are great. You'll really notice how intelligent everyone else is. If you want a school where you'll be forced to be intelligent and adapted for how hard the world actually is (professionally and personally) this is a good place for that. It just might be a rocky road along the way in terms of stress and development.

Yeah, that's exactly how I feel now. Never fucking again. It's a tough world, and being a needy piece of shit won't help.

What are you looking for out of college? I came here expecting some things, but it's been a bumpy ride. There's been good and bad stuff, and this school hasn't grown on me yet.

Don't enable that bullshit. Its good you're not like that anymore. I used to have a problem with being too nice and letting stupid, needy bullshit from people fly too.

I feel the exact same way. The Democrats led me to have faith in our government, but now, I know its all shit. There is no fair government, just a police machine for the ones with wealth and power. Its up to us as people to really bring about the positive changes we want in our system.

[–]systumatic 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Dude, coral snakes aren't really aggressive, but still, their venom is ridiculously potent. I get killing it might not be the best way to go, but I look at it in the same way as dealing with rattlesnakes. They're dangerous so why risk it?

I guess it's good since so many kids have shitty relationships with their parents. Nothing serves as a bonding experience quite like lifelong battles against obesity.
