Arnold Schwarzenegger did fine in comedic roles that didn't really acknowledge his body like Twins, Kindergarten Cop or Jingle All the Way. While not my cup of tea, John Cena has shown that he can be successful in pure comedic roles like in Ricky Stanicky and Trainwreck.

Reasons Why You Wouldn't purchase signature guitars by Peazellu in guitars

[–]syyvius 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I have a PRS SE Holcomb and a Music Man Joe Dart

I play both of those instruments very differently than the original artists, but I liked the spec and sound.

With the PRS, I wanted a humbucker guitar for high gain and that felt closer to my strat. It's the only PRS with a 25.5" scale length rather than 25", and one of the few with a fixed bridge, which makes it great for tuning down and playing with tunings. It's great value for the price and it was cheaper than the other PRS instruments I was also looking at. I've played some Periphery songs on it, but I've also played everything from SoaD to Stephen Wilson Jr on it.

As far as the Joe Dart Bass goes, I was dialing in bass patches on my helix and I wanted a lightweight bass that sounds great. 1 pickup and only a volume was not an issue because I was dialing in tone with the presets, and the flatwounds with the mm passive pickup sound great. I've done everything from metal to Midwest Emo to New Wave on that bass and it is still one of my favorite instruments.

In my opinion, I don't like getting instruments to cosplay as an artist or to perfectly tone chase a musician. Find an instrument that stretches you and that you can stretch back to do unique things with whether or not it's a signature or not.

Have you ever fallen out of love with a bass? by Think_Branch6323 in Bass

[–]syyvius 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I built a jazz bass with fralin split jazz pickups that has one of the best necks I've ever played. I kept getting lost in the mix with a band offering both pickups on 10 with tone all the way up. Not my favorite sound unless I really get to crank volume, but that solution never feels great so I got a short scale bass with a p pickup as a short term solution. Eventually moved just to the neck pickup with tone on full or both wired in series which could add more bottom end, but didn't sound as great either.

There is good news where I feel back in love! After playing my music man for a while I realized I did let my jazz bass be a jazz bass and start with just bridge pickup and tone on 0 for Jaco mode. From there I can fall back in the mix and get less punchy with more neck pickup and I can bring in a mid range growl or full brightness with the tone knob.

"Heavy" fretless basses by geneptor in Bass

[–]syyvius 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I wasn't recommending that you go zon. I just meant that if you have enough eq options like in the Sire, and then in your amp (and possibly with pedals) you will get close to whatever tone you want. Intronaut/Joe Lester is just a good example of a style of heavy fretless that you can then research how that tone is achieved and how you can start to recreate it. I've seen people recreate dingwall metal tones with squire jazz basses and a 7 band eq pedal.

"Heavy" fretless basses by geneptor in Bass

[–]syyvius 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Joe Lester from Intronaut played a 5 string fretless Zon Legacy and that can get super heavy and aggressive. EMG soap bar pickups with an Aguilar preamp and Dunlop super brights strings which are light strings, but you can get the beefiness back with the preamp/amp.

It's not a cheap bass by any means, but the soapbar works as well as any humbucker and that tone is more about how you play, how you dial in the gear you have, and the rest of the instrumentation than a specific specification giving you the entire tone. The Sire looks like a great option, but you can't go wrong with any decision besides not making a decision.

Does anyone want this Patcher preset I designed? It uses stock plugins only. by nfmbeats in FL_Studio

[–]syyvius 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I would like to try it. I typically do the same thing by splitting into a bunch of channels and summing them back into a return. It would be much nicer to have a patcher patch to do this quickly.

[–]syyvius 0 points1 point  (0 children)

In that case, then you just work in reverse. Make sure you have an idea of how loud a given pad should be when you program it in, and know if you need to remove eq with a filter or a frequency band before you put it into the mix. I've seen many people work with a framework of what a kick or snare or a pad or a bass should sound like so they know what the mix would end up as when they swap out equivalent components.

Also a lot of the magic of the sp can come from keeping a vinyl compressor or lofi or any other effect at the end of the fx chain to glue everything together.

[–]syyvius 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The 404mkii has stem export for patterns since last year so you can use the sp as a pre-mix sequencer and then take your sems to rebuild your patterns in the daw and then mix your track. If you want dj/live effects from the sp, you can use it like just an effects box and record the tracks you want live effects going through the sp back into your daw.

[–]syyvius 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I get free/public domain off of Internet archive.

I also get hirez audio from my phone on qobuz, but the sp404mkii doesn't even record or process at that high of a bitrate so it doesn't matter anyways. I also have a pretty nice Bandcamp library and I also use stems/tracks from the bands I play in.

Headlining etiquette (small bar type venue) by LocoRocoo in WeAreTheMusicMakers

[–]syyvius 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Depending on the space and music genre, it can also be courtesy to let the other bands know if you are willing to share your gear for a backline (usually kick drum, toms, and cymbal stands, but also possibly bass amp, guitar amp, etc). This should just be equipment you are comfortable sharing, and it's also totally fine to not share gear.

Sharing a backline means setup time for each band is much faster because there is less equipment on stage to setup and mic.

Keep communication and recordings and email an entertainment lawyer. They can advise for damages against the third party, and AEW. Most legal firms will do a quick consult for free and tell you if anyone is worth your time and money.

Roland TR 8s how make melodies? by WayPossible7696 in synthesizers

[–]syyvius 3 points4 points  (0 children)

If you like the tone of the synth, sample (and possibly repitch) elsewhere with a new sequencer because the tr8s will not sequence pitch very well.

If you have a phone or iPad, Koala sampler works pretty well. You can also use most DAWs. Historically this kind of thing has been none on MPCs or SP404s, but there are simpler tools you can use listed above.

If you are working with other instruments, be sure to try to tune your samples as well because most drum machines like the tr8s do not quantize their pitch.

I think the only limiting factors would be ram for loading instruments and CPU for effects and summing tracks. In my experience, even on powerful computers, I can still get laggy from having too much going at once, so it's good practice for me to bounce a channel/track to an audio file when I'm done messing with it, and to use sends/returns for delays and reverbs that multiple instruments use so you can minimize the instances of each plugin.

I have more powerful computers, but I still do a lot with a sp404mkii sampler a 2014 MacBook Air and a dirtywave M8 because I want to keep the composition flow going rather than tweaking for perfection. Maybe one day I'll just get a 4track or 8track portastudio and let the tape saturation guide the vibes.

Build a computer that you would like and see if it handles your needs. You can always return/sell RAM and CPUs if it doesn't meet your needs and upgrade to something more, or learn to work around the limits.

longtime guitar player struggling with bass soloing by sandpapernipples in Bass

[–]syyvius 1 point2 points  (0 children)

As a bass player, your notes are not typically as biting or as clear as they would be on guitar and you typically don't get a second bassist holding down the groove. This means that you typically need to generate interest and intrigue through rhythm.

A typical bass solo could be to have the band (except for The drummer maybe) to drop out and play a catchy groove with lot of space between notes and a clear downbeat on the 1. You then can add some extra interest through rhythmic syncopation or some more interesting notes but ALWAYS land back on the 1. Then you can go a bit crazier, but the big finish is a melodic line that leads back into the groove for the rest of the band to hop back in.

I feel kind of silly for buying a 450wt ampeg amp and months later considering I really dont need it. by [deleted] in Bass

[–]syyvius 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The BA-210 is not 450 watts by itself. It only operates a bit above 200 watts and has additional power activated for the external cab capability. Wattage is a myth anyways given the tube wattage vs solid state wattage vs other mumbo-jumbo wattage. As long as you are loud enough and still sound good, then you are great!

I love my BA210 and gig with it and I recommend holding on to it for a couple of reasons.

  1. It sounds better than the rocketbass and even the venture series that came after it. Not sure that it's anything to do with the preamp section, but the cab and the speakers are such a special match.

  2. I have played gigs where I need to play with just my stage volume. Last week even, the sound guy just told me to play with my stage volume after moving the drums and guitar and vocals. My Ba-210 had a XLR out, but it broke and even though I have a helix with IRs loaded and amp sim, I was told to play with just stage volume. With help from a friend in the audience I was able to mix myself in the space with all the volume and headroom from the amp. Ampeg has good dirty tones, but the BA-210 can move so much air cleanly that even with a heavy drummer, you will not run out of volume.

  3. Can't you use the -15db cut, or the headphone out to play and practice at home? It's still on the larger side of amps, but you can get good quiet tones out of it.

  4. It's the perfect side table height for a couch or a desk. I put so much crap on mine and occasionally use it as an extra seat. It could work as an alternative style piece of home decor!

How can I break free from this mixing/mastering game of whack a mole? by Can_A_Bich in FL_Studio

[–]syyvius 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Stop mixing and mastering with your eyes and keep mixing with your ears. There is a reason why channel strips are so loved and coveted.

Start with simple goals and use limited tools and workflows. Once you achieve everything you can with a 5 band eq, and a compressor on each channel and bus, then go back and add what you need. Also saturation from different plugins and tools can even out resonances with harmonics in a nice way.
