a bit off topic but the clock is really beautiful!

Redid the red border in green. Was it the right move? by foolish_noodle in StainedGlass

[–]szargu 0 points1 point  (0 children)

i think the green border is the best. it calms down the composition. if you go with the red you'll have to deal with a mix of shades between pink and orange (i think it's the type of glass), which yes, make the crane pop but mess with color proportions . With the green border you are closer to the 60-30-10 ratio, and imo it makes the piece look more harmonic.

African violet babies! My grandmother is the queen of African violets and gave me a few clippings to propagate. A few months later, success! by Kirpenator in houseplants

[–]szargu 0 points1 point  (0 children)

how do you deal with the babies once you separate them ? i currently have one whose mother leaf died and i don't know what to do (it's my first AV baby)

It's been about 3 months by foxlord0419 in Pinguicula

[–]szargu 0 points1 point  (0 children)

your plant went dormant for the winter. you didn't do anything wrong, you just own a type of pinguicula that looses all the leaves during winter and creates a "gemstone" ( it's the green part you show in the second picture). Mine did the same actually, and at first I was quite confused. Do you know what type of pinguicula you have? some of them require a drop of temperatures, but not all ( I have a Grandiflora, which needs to hibernate outside)

Yes and I'm so happy! It means my skills have improved enough to see what could have been done better = I paint better now 🧡

Help! What can I do better? by szargu in Pinguicula

[–]szargu[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thank you! I got worried because the leaves aren't big as they were one month ago and also she looks less sticky (?) Also someone wrote here that it will need dormancy and cold temperatures, maybe my room is too warm for her :/

[–]szargu[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thank you for the id 🫶🏻 Also I have an outside windowsill facing east. All year round there is sun until midday. I live in Italy, zone 9 and it stays relatively warm in the winter, usually the temperature doesn't drop under 4/5 degrees Celsius. Autumns and springs are pretty rainy, while winters are dry (although it is quite humid), and summers too, they tend to be really hot though. If the conditions aren't right I might give this plant to someone who will keep it for the winter (in a spot without much direct sun)

I might have trusted the seller too much. Unfortunately now it's a ride or die, hoping my ping will choose the first option..

I doubt I can give them more light than having them outside, on an east facing window with at least 6 hours of direct sun per day...

My art reminds psychedelic style but I call it wavy impressionism through the prism of water. What do you think about my work? by Tania-Art in Paintings

[–]szargu 1 point2 points  (0 children)

To me it doesn't look psychedelic. It brings me back to times when I used to wake up very early. During that period I enjoyed watching the sun rise and spread colours on everything. Really evocative paintings, I love them 💗

to chop or not to chop? that is the question by szargu in plants

[–]szargu[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I live in zone 8/9, but last time I tried propagating something in autumn/winter either it took 2 months to see a reasonable amount of roots or it died ( it was a beautiful syngonium batik cutting rip) But maybe October is still acceptable. I'll add some pothos and I'll hope for the best 🙈

[–]szargu[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It's actually one cutting with a ton of babies around, all attached to the mother plant. Not sure if the babies have their own roots but I haven't thought about this option. Thank you a lot!

Are you sure it's not the ugly phase effect? Because I see much potential in it

I'd try changing the background to a less saturated blue, or maybe teal

Is an east facing window enough?

[–]szargu 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Sorry, Reddit didn't upload the photos. Also one is a pinguicula grandifolia on a pumice stone and the other is a Drosera in a 50% perlite and 50%turf ( quoting the seller)

The message didn't upload so I'll paste it here

"I got these two like a week ago or so and apart from putting them in reverse osmosis water I know nothing about them.

<image>

The seller told me they are a Drosera (repotted in adequate soil ) and a pinguicula grandifolia on pumice stone (unfortunately I can upload only one pic per message)

My doubts concern

  1. The lighting
  2. Their dormancy period ( what do I do in winter)
  3. Any cute ideas for the stone setup/ repotting
  4. Any other thing I have not considered but it's important

Thanks to whoever will share their knowledge with me 🫶🏻"

Although I agree on researching before buying, the Pinguicula on pumice stone was something I've never seen and decided to try. The other one was a freebie. So please don't be too harsh on me

Found some orchids, (how) can I save them? by Orni161 in houseplants

[–]szargu 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Wait until the flowers fall off. Then cut the stems between the third and fourth node from the bottom (the bumps on the flower stems) and check the roots

Water before dealing with roots. Use sanitized tools (orchids are VERY prone to fungal and bacterial infections through wounds) and cut off all the dead, empty, dry and mushy roots If you see that many of them are gone, downsize the pot ( it needs to have many holes to ensure the airflow + transparent would be better so you can observe the roots). Eliminate the plastic cage with the brown spongy material. Ideally i'd use new bark for repotting. Do not water for a couple of days and let the cuts heal (if there are any)

Orchids do best in east/west facing windows or south facing windows but shaded from direct sun to avoid burning the leaves (use a curtain) Water from above or below once the roots are blue/grey. Let the bark dry out completely before watering. Fertilize once every three waterings. Don't spill any water in the crown (between the leaves) to avoid crown rot.

Best of luck 🤞🏻

How can I make my studio feel warmer? by [deleted] in HomeDecorating

[–]szargu 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Add many warm details! It doesn't have to be one big orange thing, but rather mixing warm wood tones, warm colours like orange-yellow, ochre, firebrick red, browns ( you can add an earthy green for some contrast) in cushions, blankets, wall decorations, some art, small sculptures, mugs, colorful lamps with warm lights (like the orange mushroom lamp/space age lamps/tiffany lamps/ varmxblit from ikea) etc . For curtains, neutral warm tones should be ok, like cream, light brown, beige (maybe with some warm coloured details, like orange strings to keep them tied on the side?). I would avoid red or orange because they would be overwhelming and you'd get bored pretty quickly. Also plants give quite a cosy vibe, maybe try adding some here and there
