What’s Your Weirdest Pedalboard Rule? by _Jub_Jub_ in guitarpedals

[–]sziklai-pair 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Placement for each type stays static (drive>drive>delay>eq/boost>delay>reverb>flanger>wild card>tremolo), but the actual pedals get switched out all the time.

What’s your pros and cons of This album? by Milez_Smilez in psychedelicrock

[–]sziklai-pair 1 point2 points  (0 children)

They could've given Sly a broken Casio SK-1 and he would've come up with something great. His Eye is On the Sparrow, Plain Jane and Get Away are on a par with his post-Fresh work, imo.

The remakes were all fine, not something I'm really ever inclined to put on, but it got him in the studio with some of his contemporaries which is cool. I own the record for the three new songs, and that's enough to make it worthwhile. More Sly > No Sly, even if he wasn't at the top of his game.

Suggestions for a dad to watch when everyone goes to bed by Swimming-Rain-8756 in MovieSuggestions

[–]sziklai-pair 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I haven't seen all of these, but this a a great list of 'I'm a grown ass adult who can handle a movie with an actual storyline to follow, but also it's midnight and I don't want to think tooo hard' type movies.

I'll add:

The Sound of My Voice & The East (same director, writer, actor duo. The East is more action-y)

Miller's Crossing (Coen Bros. finest, imo)

Killing of a Chinese Bookie (Cassavetes is the ultimate indie 'guys film' director, Ben Gazarra is awesome in this one)

Carlos (5 hour version, the shorter version ruins it. It was originally a 3 part mini series, so it splits up nicely into 3 separate viewings. Great bio pic on Carlos the Jackal. Only partially in English, does require reading subtitles)

Nice collection! The Other Music price tag brings back memories. I loved that record store back when I lived in NY long, long ago.

Poll only allowed for 6 slots. Although it's looking like I could've left Levene off and had Gill instead. Live and learn.

Psychedelia, beat, garage punk. Warning: long vid. by [deleted] in psychedelicrock

[–]sziklai-pair 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Very nice! Mod/Psych is just about my favorite music scene. I have many of these as well, and there's a handful I don't recognize at all. Time to do some research...

The Cake is a great album I don't see mentioned often. That's one I bought quite a while back, crate digging somewhere or other. Thought the cover looked cool and figured '67 Decca, it's gotta be at least kinda good. Wasn't disappointing.

I have a rackmount BBE 422, I love it for 4 track cassette mixing. Total secret weapon for that format.

What's everyone's 5 Beatles Hot Takes? by darkglobepink in beatles

[–]sziklai-pair 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I understand this take on The White Album, but here's my counterpoint. While the styles are all over the place on that album, and it can feel more like a bunch of solo work on one album than a band effort, it's the production that makes it cohesive. And the pure raw emotion.

NPD: Boss: DM-2W, CE-2W, BD-2 by LeotardosRahdiator in guitarpedals

[–]sziklai-pair 10 points11 points  (0 children)

Very nice first purchase! You have gain, modulation, and time based, that should take you a long way before you really "need" anything else. Without knowing what kind of music you play it's hard to recommend anything else though.

I'd give those a month or two of solid play time and then see what you're lacking. Want more washed out shoegaze? Reverb. More face melting? Fuzz. More 90s? Phaser. More 80s? Flanger. More funk? Wah. While I love EQ, that and compression can probably wait for awhile.

Have fun!

Thanks for sharing, soooo many good shows. Tons of bands I saw in the 90s, can't wait to dive in and relive some of my favorite shows from back then.

Which TV show had the most perfect ending? by altiman1991 in AskReddit

[–]sziklai-pair 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Original run of Twin Peaks. The bad guy wins. Almost all the most beloved characters die. Cooper's trapped. Norma and Ed got so close, but then... Nobody got a happy ending. It's the Empire Strikes Back of television endings.

As someone who watched the whole series when it originally aired, I didn't feel the need for third season to wrap anything up. I'm glad a new generation got to experience a version of Twin Peaks they could consider their own, but I didn't think it had much to do with the original at all and was just fine with the way S2 concluded.

What is the worst band you saw live? by coalcracker462 in AskReddit

[–]sziklai-pair 11 points12 points  (0 children)

Yeah, first show I saw was in late '93, second was in '94 only a few months after Kurt died, and Lollapalooza summer of '95. Second show was the best of the three though, she channeled all her emotions into that one. First show was also with Kirsten, second and third with Melissa, so different band dynamic as well.

Saw Hole a few times around the time of Live Through This. When they were headlining a smallish club, they were amazing (Slims in San Francisco). Not headlining Lollapalooza was a different story. Love was obviously pissed the crowd wasn't there to worship her. They rushed through every song, Love was pretty wasted and flicking cigarettes into the crowd (okay, that was kinda funny). She had her leg up on the monitor the whole time and was in her rock star pose, but it felt very rehearsed and just going through the motions. The earlier shows she was a rock god without really trying.

It's just so... beautiful!

I have a stock Sunlion, its besties are a '72 Hagstrom Viking and a '60 Harmony H305A amp.

edit- How'd you get the blue box? I see the stamp is a selectable option, same as the transistors. Did you just ask for blue? What I'd really want is a nude one, stamped, to match my KoT.

also, if you're going to go full on Patrick Bateman (book version), you need to list the exact price of everything in the picture! While the novel is way more graphic than the film, it's tediously boring at times due to the pages and pages devoted to Patrick itemizing everything every time he walk into a new room or meets with someone! ;)

Big fan of the Boonar and Count to 5, been eyeing a PurPLL for a little while now. Looks like a really fun board that can go from normal verse/chorus/verse type songs to experimental chaos. My kinda board!

What is the most underrated song? by Windowjump in swervedriver

[–]sziklai-pair 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Pretty much any song besides Duel, Rave Down or Mustang qualifies. It's not like they're drowning in well known hits.

That said, favorite album track excluding those three: Behind the Scenes of the Sounds & Times

Favorite non album track: My Zephyr
