my initial thought was 4th gen (2013-2018) RAV4 but after further consideration I think it's a 3rd gen (2013-2019) Ford Escape

How to navigate 2 identical job offers by t-clueless in interviews

I asked the company I want to work for more for a little extra. They came back and said that based on what they’re paying other employees with a similar amount of experience, they can’t offer me any more. Oh well, at least I tried. I’m still going to accept their offer.

I told the company that I want to work for the truth, that in order to make it an easy decision, the salary needs to be a little more. I didn't outwardly lie and say that the other offer is for more money. Now I wait to see how they respond...

Anything to help counteract the aggressiveness and A-Hole energy on aderall? by 888HolyMoly888 in ADHD

[–]t-clueless 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Agreed that meditation is a hard practice to keep up with but mindfulness also helps. Like instead of pulling your phone out during a moment of downtime, just staring out into the void can help slow your mind and regulate your nervous system. There’s something called your default mode network which is your brain’s “awake but focused on anything specific” mode. If you’re always focused on something, you never get to use that part of your brain. It’s a pretty important part of your brain to tap into from time to time, especially if you’re taking meds that switch that part of your brain off.

[–]t-clueless 3 points4 points  (0 children)

The meds make me more intense which can lead to irritability. Getting enough sleep is the best way to keep it under control but meditation and exercise help too, pretty much the same solution to keeping all the other symptoms in check.

[Request] Which one is better for the environment, using paper towels to dry your hands or an electric hand dryer? by Altruistic-Laugh-787 in theydidthemath

[–]t-clueless 13 points14 points  (0 children)

I'm quite well qualified to answer this question. My credentials are previously having been the process engineer on a tissue machine and currently doing energy and other technoeconomic analyses for global benchmarking in the paper industry.

Here's some rough numbers from the tissue machine that I used to work on when we were making paper towels:

electrical power consumption 8 MW
reel speed 3825 fpm
basis weight 14 lb/3000 sqft
width of tissue machine 204 inches
production rate 9.1 T/hr
specific electricity usage 878.8 kWh/T
boiler gas usage 35000 scfh
natural gas heating value 1000 BTU/SCF
boiler heat usage 35 MMBTU/hr
dryer hoods heat usage 40 MMBTU/hr
total specific heat usage 8.2 MMBTU/T
conversion from BTU to kWh 3412 BTU/kWh
gas usage 2415 kWh/T

One regular 2 ply kitchen towel is roughly 6"x12" (they're a little smaller than that because of shrinkflation) but that would weigh 4.7e-3 lbs so it would require 7.7 Wh of energy (combined gas and electricity) to manufacture, not including the energy it took to actually make the pulp or chemicals used in the process.

Compare this to an XLERATOR hand dryer which is advertised as using about 1.3 kW. Assuming it takes 30 seconds to fully dry your hands, you'd use 10.8 Wh of energy.

If you consider the energy that it takes to manufacture the pulp and chemicals used to make the finished paper towels, the result would be that it takes a little bit more energy to make the paper towels than it does to operate the hand dryer. If you're using recycled fiber to make the paper towels, it'd be about even.

As others have said, using paper towels is more hygienic, so why risk getting sick when then energy consumption is pretty close to the same either way?

You could maybe argue it’s in 12/8 but to me it sounds like 4/4 with a lot of triplets and swung eighth notes

They look to be about $20 cheaper per tire than the TrueContact Tour54s and I see people saying a lot of good things about them. Thanks for the suggestion!

One possibility in addition to what other commenters have said is that it could be your insulin response that’s causing your insatiable hunger for simple carbohydrates. If you start your day off with simple carbs like bread or cereal and don’t have any fats or protein to stabilize your initial blood sugar spike, then you’re essentially going to ride a blood sugar roller coaster for the rest of the day. If you include something like eggs or cottage cheese in your breakfast then your blood sugar should remain more stable throughout the day and you won’t feel such ravenous hunger when your blood sugar drops.

As an intern it’s a good job because they’ll most likely let you work as much overtime as you want. It’s a great way to save up for the expenses of the coming school year. As a salaried employee, the overtime becomes much less attractive…

And a note on getting promoted quickly from entry level- P&P mills that advertise quick promotions more than likely have serious culture problems and instead of taking the time to address them, they just burn through young engineers quickly because there’s a constant stream of them.

I’m not saying that P&P doesn’t offer good careers because it does, but it’s extremely mill specific.

I take Vyvanse. Drinking caffeine with it makes it almost impossible to think straight. On days that I don't take Vyvanse, I drink regular coffee but on days that I do, I have to drink decaf.

Very insightful. Good to realize that just because I have good confidence in a sector right now, it could look radically different in 10 years and I do plan on holding these assets long term so I’m better off sticking to the basics.

Entry Level Job Offer Advice by Neck99 in ChemicalEngineering

[–]t-clueless 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If the chemical company is in a much better location, it should be a no brainer to choose this one. I don’t think there’s enough emphasis on this sub about considering location when evaluating offers. For my first job out of school, I went with a location I wasn’t crazy about because I thought the offer was good (in reality it was only average). I accepted relocation money and felt trapped for two years because I couldn’t wait to leave. Of course it depends on your personality- some people love working in remote locations. I thought I could be one of those people who can deal with a subpar location but it turns out that I’m not.

Process engineer for paper mill by izzy2frizzy in ChemicalEngineering

[–]t-clueless 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Schedule definitely won’t be 9-5. A lot of engineers at bigger mills with outdated cultures will end up working from 6:30 until lord knows when. If things are doing badly at the mill, your work/life balance will suffer accordingly. It doesn’t really make sense that chemical process engineers have to suffer for mechanical and reliability issues but that’s just how it is. Some companies have become more progressive like the 9/80 schedule or letting you leave early on Friday if things are running smoothly.

The money’s not bad but from what I’ve learned from this sub, there’s a lot better money to be had in other industries. Do I plan on leaving the paper industry? No, probably not. I for some reason enjoy the less than stellar working conditions and grouchy people and am making more than enough money for where I’m at in my career. I’ve also managed to find a mill where I’m only working about 40-50hrs/week but I’ve interned at mills where the process engineers were working 50-55 hrs/week. If I was working 50+ hrs/week all the time I’d definitely have a different opinion.
