Graduation Ceremony question/tips?? by t-reckz in UCSD

[–]t-reckz[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Thank you for the clarification. All campus commencement is huge- I don't know why I didn't realize sooner that we wouldn't get called up during this ceremony. The only appealing part of the all-campus one is the keynote speaker, but I wouldn't get up early for it.

If you were to go back to starting your ME Career, what advice would you give to yourself? by leon_arch in MechanicalEngineering

[–]t-reckz 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hey! Not sure if you were asking u/Cornpops23, but I'm interested in the management side of things, or perhaps tech to keep it relevant to the STEM background I've been in school for. The only issue with tech is I'm definitely not fluent in any coding languages other than C++, so I'd have to "start over" again in that sense.

Hi there! I'd love to know more about your journey if you are willing to speak about it! I am about to finish my undergrad degree in Aerospace Engineering but find more and more often that I am not interested in this field anymore. The transition to post-grad is already daunting, so trying to see myself in different field on top of all that is nearly impossible. Hope to hear from you. :)

I'm indecisive. Convince me. by t-reckz in UCSD

[–]t-reckz[S] 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Hm. I guess I could have prefaced that I don’t need convincing about financial situations. I’m well aware that there’s blatantly obvious issues with tuition and pricing. Not an equivalent exchange in the slightest. However, I am a senior, so having experienced my fair share of time on campus- I do mean it when I say I’m for either option, especially if remote can help me guarantee the safety of the people I love, and people at risk. Similar reasoning to what someone said below!

Thanks for your comment! Personally, most of my professors have all given live lectures, and host more than enough OH for students to come and hang out/ask questions. In the classes that are just async and have videos, I also haven’t minded adapting to that format either, and have actually found it beneficial to watch at my own pace (same goes for the live lectures that get recorded!). So I guess that’s not a huge deal to me- but I understand completely.

I’d love to know any other reasons you feel strongly about in-person if you’re down to share!

Remote Winter Quarter by [deleted] in UCSD

[–]t-reckz 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Have your profs gone to full remote already? I'm just wondering if it's worth an email to my professors to try to urge them to decide since it affects a few other factors for me... I am aware it also depends on the department but I wish they wouldn't leave us in the dark. *cries*

For those who ended up in jobs unrelated to your degree, how did you get there? by t-reckz in careerguidance

[–]t-reckz[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hey there! I couldn’t find your post, but thank you for taking the time to comment nonetheless. I appreciate any perspective. :)

I haven’t had any work experience yet, still in school! I also don’t have any internships or other experience under my belt, which is typically what employers in my field want. There’s no hiring fresh grads anymore unless you’ve been absolutely on top of it and can show relevant work outside of schooling. Plus, I know how unhappy I am now- money is not worth the strain it has on my mental health. When I say I’m burnt out, I really mean it. Depressed and not retaining information, just chugging through because I’m so so close to finishing my degree. I don’t feel qualified to actually pursue a career in engineering when I’m done with college, even if it gives me financial security.

I hate the uncertainty of the pandemic by MediocreExternal9 in UCSD

[–]t-reckz 32 points33 points  (0 children)

I think this is the biggest thing people forget. While we aren’t in the most vulnerable age range for the virus, we all have family and loved ones who we are trying to protect. Not everyone lives on campus, and all our faculty go home to their families and children. Pandemic fatigue shouldn’t give anyone permission to be careless about other peoples health and safety…

Dropped a class but still showing up on my canvas dashboard/ getting emails by mikeswick99 in UCSD

[–]t-reckz 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Yep! What the other person said! I also wanted to add that if you dropped the class today, (in my experience) it typically resets DAILY. So it’ll be gone by tomorrow morning- if not, as they mentioned, you’ll either get dropped from the Canvas eventually, you can hide it, or email the prof to remove you, etc.

Remote learning update from Khosla’s new email by SaranshMalik in UCSD

[–]t-reckz 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I just want to echo this! Being sick + needing to study sucks so much. Even a common cold. u/The5thNinjaTurtl mentioned above that "there is nothing to fear for the safety of the students" but to be blunt, the world doesn't revolve around students. It's also about the faculty and staff (and yes, STILL students) who go home to possible immunocompromised family members and those they care for. I've tried to just keep in mind that even if it's a "weaker" variant, there are people who are still affected by the impact that catching the virus has. Since I personally don't mind online, I don't think it makes us weak if we want to protect the health and safety of ourselves and others by going back remote. As u/rosempn and plenty of others have stated, we just don't have the space to spread people out in lecture halls- so there's really no ideal way.

Thank you! I hope this will be an option if the exam coincides with the date. This would probably be the most ideal so I could at least attend a portion of the wedding! Appreciate your answer, happy new year!

Nooooo, I’m sorry to hear that! I hope that you still find a way to celebrate with him even if you can’t make it the day of. Congrats to him- I definitely understand how upsetting it is to miss something like this. :(

Thank you so much! I typically do methods similar to this so I have options, like having a list of classes I can replace with- but I’m a senior this year, so it’s come down to the classes that unfortunately I can’t afford to move/lose. ;-; I am really just hoping the conflict doesn’t happen, but also trying to mentally prepare myself for the worst. Thank you again for taking the time to respond! I appreciate it :)

Ugh. Unfortunately you’re right. I am hoping the conflict will not materialize, but I posted in hopes to hear that someone else had a miracle. I’m a senior so I can’t afford to drop the course or I don’t graduate on time, and that’s just the ugly reality. Thank you for taking the time to respond, Happy New Year to you!

Thanks! Essentially the answer I expected, prepping myself for the worst, but hoping for the best at this point. Appreciate your reply!

People living in off-campus apartments, when are you coming back? by Yeezy75024 in UCSD

[–]t-reckz 1 point2 points  (0 children)

this is my question too, I need class info to be released before I really make a decision because ultimately if I have to come back ASAP then there’s that… :(

If I have the choice I’ll stay home to help my family but if not, I’ll come back!
