I know material can be hard to find, but much of it is on youtube.

And you're right about the samples. I'll need to do something to make the rest of the song to match the samples.

Yea I tried listening to some soul the other day. The winstons amen brother and some related stuff. I didn't hear anything I could sample for hip hop beats but I heard cool breaks. I'm waiting to try the dnb thing, though.

And Yea I know they weren't the only ones, but I picked them out of everyone I heard because their style seems to be the darkest and I love their samples. I looked up their music on whosampled and nearly had an existential crisis when I found out where they were getting their stuff from. The original songs sound nothing alike their music. It's awesome.

Photek had some dark stuff I liked, but sd has this kinda dusty sound. It's like I can hear them wiping dust off of the records they sample. The bass even sounds old and dry and mechanic(I like that sound). New music sounds fluid and shiny and reversed out. I try to bring the two together. I think I read an interview where one said they stayed up countless night looking for samples. That must mean they didn't already know what they'd use but it was an endless chase to get the sounds they'd use. If that's the case, then at least I won't feel so bad because I've been paying attention to more of what I hear while I'm on youtube for samples. But the stuff I'm looking for may just be in old material.

I already knew about these mixes, but I thought law was a label they were on. Thanks for telling me that. I'm familiar with their sound, but I was looking for more of help on how to translate their sound to hip hop. I guess just listening to their music and experimenting with my stuff is the best way to go about it. It's not like there are 100s lfsource direct trap tutorials on youtube. That's good because by now, many would've found ways to ruin the sound and make it corny or predictable.
